Hace unos días me encontraba sin saber cómo matar el tiempo y decidí ver por milésima vez una de mis películas preferidas, por supuesto, La doncella. Esa calificación, se debe en su mayoría a que es una adaptación a película de mi libro preferido, Fingersmith, que además cuenta también con una adaptación a mini serie de la cual estaré hablando en un futuro cercano. Para mí siempre ha sido un placer ver cómo se transforma una historia y se convierta en algo propio con una personalidad completamente distinta que consiga de igual manera mantenerse fiel a su esencia original, un arte que muchos no logran. Saber, antes de verla, que Sara Waters quien es la autora del libro se inspiró en ese ambiente de la época victoriana para el libro añade mayor nivel de impresión al trabajo de Par Chan-Wook, director de esta adaptación cinematográfica.
Greetings to all the members of the community, how are you? A few days ago I was at a loss as to how to kill time and decided to watch for the thousandth time one of my favorite movies, of course, The Handmaiden. That rating is mostly due to the fact that it is a movie adaptation of my favorite book, Fingersmith, which also has a mini-series adaptation that I will be talking about in the near future. For me it has always been a pleasure to see how a story is transformed and becomes something of its own with a completely different personality that still manages to stay true to its original essence, an art that many do not achieve. Knowing, before seeing it, that Sara Waters who is the author of the book was inspired by that Victorian era setting for the book adds a greater level of impression to the work of Par Chan-Wook, director of this film adaptation.
Aquí nos encontramos en una Corea colonial, en la década de 1930, es decir, durante la colonización japonesa. Desde un principio conoceremos desde una perspectiva cuáles son las intenciones de este grupo de personajes cuyos objetivos a decir verdad se encuentran en lo moralmente incorrecto, pero, puedes llagar a empatizar sobre las razones que los llevan a esto al ser tiempos difíciles. El personaje principal de la primera parte —está dividida en dos— será Sook-hee interpretada por la actriz Kim Tae-ri quien después de ser convencida por un estafador que se hará pasar por un conde, interpretado por el actor Ha Jung-woo, llevarán a cabo un plan para hacerse de la grande fortuna de Hideko, aunque esta esté custodiada por su tío. Al tratarse de una trama sobre suspenso y thriller psicológico pues no será tan fácil como aparenta, descubriéndose una serie de secretos que tendrán por objetivo además de añadirle profundidad a esta historia el de conseguir sorprendernos a nosotros los espectadores, incentivándonos a prestar esa atención a los detalles.
Here we find ourselves in a colonial Korea, in the 1930s, that is, during the Japanese colonization. From the beginning we will know from a perspective what are the intentions of this group of characters whose objectives are actually morally wrong, but you can empathize with the reasons that lead them to this being difficult times. The main character of the first part -it is divided in two- will be Sook-hee played by actress Kim Tae-ri who, after being convinced by a swindler pretending to be a count, played by actor Ha Jung-woo, will carry out a plan to get Hideko's big fortune, even though it is guarded by her uncle. As this is a suspense and psychological thriller plot, it will not be as easy as it seems, discovering a series of secrets that will not only add depth to the story, but will also surprise us, the viewers, encouraging us to pay attention to details.
Esta producción cinematográfica explota el aspecto erótico de la trama de una manera que no se había visto antes en relación a esta historia en especial si se tiene en consideración la adaptación anterior que había mencionado, traslada en ese sentido la narrativa por completo al ambiente asiático donde se desarrolla y los aspectos relevantes de igual manera sin cambiarlos por completo, aunque sí es cierto que algunos de los puntos centrales de la trama sí que fueron cambiados, supongo que por cuestiones de que debe agregársele también originalidad. Esto fue algo que me gustó, porque si has leído el libro y visto la mini serie de Fingersmith existe la posibilidad de que pese a esos cambios artísticos al terminar siendo la trama igual puede llegar a aburrir, situación que, la verdad, aquí no ocurre siempre que la producción logró agregarle sus propios giros de forma que logró sorprender a todos por igual sin sacrificar la esencia de la que proviene. Debo decir entonces que el resultado del guion es espectacular.
This film production exploits the erotic aspect of the plot in a way that had not been seen before in relation to this story especially if you take into consideration the previous adaptation that I had mentioned, in that sense moves the narrative completely to the Asian environment where it develops and the relevant aspects in the same way without changing them completely, although it is true that some of the central points of the plot were changed, I guess for reasons that must also add originality. This was something I liked, because if you have read the book and seen the mini-series of Fingersmith there is the possibility that despite these artistic changes, the plot could get boring, a situation that, to be honest, does not happen here as long as the production managed to add its own twists in a way that managed to surprise everyone equally without sacrificing the essence from which it comes from. I must say then that the result of the script is spectacular.
Los detalles oscuros son resaltados para transformarla en esta historia mucho más cruda y en cierta manera adulta, se evidencia esa característica dada al cine asiático como sello que le hace sobresalir, por lo que debo resaltar que esta no es una película para ver acompañado de familiares precisamente, sobre todo padres, podría resultar incómodo, es una advertencia. Esto se realza a su vez con la elección de colores, la predominancia de los tonos oscuros y poca iluminación, una particularidad que gusta, al menos desde mi perspectiva. El hecho de que hayan decidido mostrar más detalles de las circunstancias que envuelven a la historia se me hizo interesante, por poder observar lo que los diversos personajes han tenido que pasar, evidenciándose la perversión que se profundiza poco en la primera adaptación, así que podría decirse que en ese aspecto esta resulta ganadora.
The dark details are highlighted to transform it into this much more raw and somewhat adult story, that characteristic given to Asian cinema is evident as a seal that makes it stand out, so I must emphasize that this is not a film to see accompanied by family precisely, especially parents, it could be uncomfortable, it is a warning. This is in turn enhanced by the choice of colors, the predominance of dark tones and low lighting, a particularity that pleases, at least from my perspective. The fact that they have decided to show more details of the circumstances surrounding the story was interesting to me, for being able to observe what the various characters have had to go through, evidencing the perversion that is little deepened in the first adaptation, so it could be said that in that aspect this one is a winner.
El desarrollo de los personas a mí me parece de lo mejor, está la inocencia, perversión, codicia, engaño, trauma… todo lo que se podría esperar de esta situación particular que se va desarrollando a lo largo de la película, de una manera muy hermosa que lo convierte así en una obra de arte casi de forma inadvertida. Quien mayor atención se merece podría ser en partes iguales los personajes principales femeninos que no terminan siendo lo que eran en un principio, el empoderamiento es real y llega desde romper cadenas opresoras hasta encontrarse a sí mismas. Nos deja ver que se puede ser, aunque no lo parezca, inocente y calculador a la vez, que una persona está llena de estos múltiples matices, así que es mejor no encasillar a nadie antes de verdaderamente saber. Esto es lo que creo que me hace querer verla de vez en cuando siempre que se pueda, y hablar de ella como una de mis películas preferidas.
The development of the characters seems to me to be the best, there is innocence, perversion, greed, deceit, trauma... everything you would expect from this particular situation that develops throughout the film, in a very beautiful way that makes it a work of art almost unnoticed. Who deserves more attention could be in equal parts the main female characters who do not end up being what they were in the beginning, the empowerment is real and comes from breaking oppressive chains to find themselves. It lets us see that you can be, even if it doesn't seem like it, innocent and calculating at the same time, that a person is full of these multiple shades, so it's best not to pigeonhole anyone before you truly know. This is what I think makes me want to watch it from time to time whenever I can, and talk about it as one of my favorite movies.
