Ever since I saw Hamilton: An American Musical 2 years ago, I discovered that I am more of a lover of musicals than I thought I was. I already came with a love for them with Mamma Mia, La La Land, Into the Woods and The Greatest Showman; but the moment I finished watching Lil-Manuel Miranda's musical play, I completely fell in love with the genre and started looking for more, wanting to get that same thrill again.

. The story revolves around Usnavi, played by Anthony Ramos, a young man who grew up on the beaches of the Dominican Republic to later take over the bodega with his cousin Sony, saving little by little to return to, as he says, the best days of his life in his native country and restore his father's bar, El sueñito.

Nina is another of the main characters, the only girl in the neighborhood who managed to graduate from high school and enter college, being the pride of her father. When she returns to the neighborhood, it's not exactly to visit, but to bring the news that she dropped out of Stanford. With the knowledge that all of Washington Heights had their hopes pinned on her, the pressure she carried on her shoulders at times was unbearable.

The character that caused me the most nostalgia was grandmother Claudia, the typical lady who never had children and adopted an entire neighborhood under her teachings and rich recipes of traditional dishes. Immigrant since she was a child, watching her mother cleaning houses and striving to bring food to the table, she is the clear example of Latino strength.

. The songs on In The Heights have that spice that characterizes us, that tumbao and rhythm that incites us to dance, even if we don't know how to move our hips. It evokes in us that nostalgia of returning to their land and also the joy of feeling that you are in the right place with the right people.

Desde que vi Hamilton: An American Musical hace 2 años, descubrí que soy más amante de los musicales de lo que creía. Ya venía con un amor hacia ellos con Mamma Mia, La La Land, Into the Woods y The Greatest Showman; pero en el momento en que terminé de ver la obra musical de Lil-Manuel Miranda, me enamoré por completo del género y comencé a buscar más, queriendo conseguir esa misma emoción de nuevo.

. La historia gira en torno a Usnavi, interpretado por Anthony Ramos, un joven que creció en las playas de República Dominicana para luego encargarse de la bodega con su primo Sony, ahorrando poco a poco para volver a, como dice él, los mejores días de su vida en su país natal y restaurar el bar de su padre, El sueñito.

Nina es otra de las protagonistas, la única chica del barrio que logró graduarse de la secundaria y entrar a la universidad, siendo el orgullo de su padre. Cuando regresa al barrio, no es precisamente para visitar, sino para traer la noticia de que abandonó Stanford. Con la certeza de que todo Washington Heights tenía sus esperanzas puestas en ella, la presión que cargaba en sus hombros a veces era insostenible.

El personaje que me causó más nostalgia fue la abuela Claudia, la típica señora que nunca tuvo hijos y adoptó todo un barrio bajo sus enseñanzas y ricas recetas de platos tradicionales. Inmigrante desde niña, viendo a su madre limpiando casas y esforzándose para traer la comida a la mesa, es el claro ejemplo de la fuerza latina.

. Las canciones en In The Heights tienen esa sazón que nos caracteriza, ese tumbao y ritmo que nos incita a bailar, incluso si no sabemos mover nuestras caderas. Nos evoca esa nostalgia de volver a sus tierras y también la alegría de sentirte que estás en el lugar correcto con las personas correctas.

Creo que lo que más me maravilló de este musical es el sentido de comunidad y unión. A pesar de que vengamos de lugares distintos, tengamos dialectos y costumbres diferentes, tenemos en común esas ganas de salir adelante, sin vergüenza de trabajar lo que sea necesario para tener una vida mejor. Por ello, mi escena favorita es cuando los personajes reúnen todas las banderas de nuestra gente, una comunidad orgullosa de sus raíces y levantando con honor su voz para decir "Soy latino". Todo el número musical es una celebración a nuestra identidad y fuerza.
