Never Have I Ever was exactly the tv show I needed to repair a dreary weekend and I hope it's as refreshing for you as it was for me. Its first season boasts 10 episodes which, easily, can be watched in a day and trust me, it won't be enough.

You see, the story of Never Have I Ever revolves around Devi, a Hindu teenager who is about to start her first day of school. Among the things she asks for in her prayers, we will hear that there is nothing to wish for more than to have a handsome boyfriend because she has never had one and is, of course, a virgin.

The title of the show comes from a very popular party game and, as it suggests, this tv show tells us about the naivety in the inexperience of Devi, who is determined to become popular along with her two best friends, Eleanor and Fabiola.

So far, the plot may seem commonplace and nothing we haven't seen, but in Devi's story there is the small detail that she is paralyzed in her legs and in a wheelchair for three months, after her dad (a cheerful and lovely man) died of a heart attack in his orchestra performance. With this, we get a small glimpse of how Never Have I Ever will tackle the issue of bereavement and how Devi handles the worst of feelings behind the mask of everything being okay.

As we'll get used to in this tv show, the reason Devi was cured of her paralysis is quite comical, as what inspired her to walk was a view of the body of swimmer Paxton, a student at her high school.

There are many countless moments in this tv show that, no matter how much we want to, we won't be able to stop watching, because it's both painful and funny at the same time and that's what makes it charming. Just telling you about how the first episode ends with Devi offering sex to Paxton, without having spoken at all before, I think that's enough to give you an idea.

In Never Have I Ever we will be able to sympathize with Devi on several occasions and it is his cocky confidence that makes us love her a little more. We will love the moments where she realizes her mistakes and frustration and sympathy will not be lacking when she wants to settle the issue of her father with an attitude that she is unaffected, let alone cares.

With Paxton we are shown that he is not only a cute guy who doesn't care about academics, but someone observant and friendly who asks Devi how she is feeling and inquires about her day. A boy who evidently only sees her as a strange friend.

We'll also see that Ben, Devi's deadly enemy, isn't so bad either as he confesses how lonely his life is and this builds an affection between the two of them that we didn't know we needed. The icing on the cake (which turned out to be one of the most embarrassingly tender things I've ever seen) was the scene where Devi's mother invites Ben over for dinner.

But, without a doubt, the best part of Never Have I Ever are the scenes where Devi's dad appears (either in visions or memories) as they manage to evoke the mourning she feels in our hearts, making us feel more united with the tv show and the family love that stands out so much. These scenes give Never Have I Ever a deeper, more adult feel in just the right amount to balance the comedy scenes.

Its final episodes are, truly, pure gold as they are loaded with heart-wrenching emotional weight and leave us eagerly awaiting its second season (which I haven't had a chance to watch yet). I highly recommend Never Have I Ever if you need something refreshing and fun and, while its premise may not be the flashiest among other titles, it may give you a pleasant surprise if you give it a chance.

Never Have I Ever has some light discussion of sex, but it's still a very family-friendly tv show.

Never Have I Ever era exactamente la serie que necesitaba para reparar un fin de semana deprimente y espero que sea tan refrescante para ustedes como lo fue para mi. Su primera temporada cuenta con 10 episodios que, con facilidad, se puede ver en un día y, créanme, no será suficiente.

Verán, la historia de Never Have I Ever gira en torno a Devi, una adolescente hindú que está a punto de empezar su primer día de clases. Entre las cosas que pide en sus oraciones, escucharemos que no hay nada que desear más que tener un novio atractivo porque nunca ha tenido y es, por supuesto, virgen.

El título de la serie viene a raíz de un juego de fiesta muy popular y, como lo sugiere, esta serie nos habla de la ingenuidad en la inexperiencia de Devi, quien está determinada a volverse popular junto a sus dos mejores amigas, Eleanor y Fabiola.

Hasta ahora, el argumento puede parecer algo común y nada que no hayamos visto, pero en la historia de Devi se encuentra el pequeño detalle de que queda paralizada de las piernas y en silla de ruedas por tres meses, después de que su papá (un hombre alegre y, probablemente, su único verdadero amigo) falleciera de un infarto en su presentación en la orquesta. Con esto, podemos tener un pequeño vistazo a cómo la serie abordará el tema del luto y el cómo Devi maneja el peor de los sentimientos tras la máscara de que todo está bien.

Como nos iremos acostumbrando en este show, la razón por la que Devi fue curada de su parálisis es bastante cómica, pues lo que la inspiró a caminar fue una vista del cuerpo del nadador Paxton, un estudiante de su colegio.

Existen muchos e incontables momentos en esta serie que, por más que queramos, no podremos dejar de ver, pues resulta tan penoso como divertido a la vez y es lo que la hace encantadora. Con solo decirles de que el primer episodio termina con Devi ofreciéndole sexo a Paxton, sin haber hablado antes en absoluto, creo que es suficiente para que tengan una idea.

En Never Have I Ever seremos capaces de simpatizar con Devi en varias ocasiones y es su confianza arrogante lo que nos hace quererle un poco más. Amaremos los momentos donde se da cuenta de sus errores y la frustración y compasión no faltará cuando quiera zanjar el tema de su padre con un actitud de que no le afecta y, mucho menos, le importa.

Con Paxton se nos muestra que no solo es un chico lindo que no le importa los estudios, sino alguien observador y amigable que le pregunta a Devi cómo se siente y le pregunta por su día. Un chico que, evidentemente, solo la ve como una extraña amiga.

También veremos que Ben, el enemigo a muerte de Devi, tampoco es tan malo al confesar lo solitario de su vida y esto construye un afecto entre ambos que no sabíamos que necesitábamos. La cereza del pastel (que resultó una de las cosas más vergonzosas y tiernas que he visto) fue la escena donde la madre de Devi invita a cenar a Ben.

Pero, sin duda, la mejor parte de la serie son las escenas donde aparece el papá de Devi (ya sea en visiones o recuerdos) pues logra evocar el luto que siente ella en nuestros corazones, sintiéndonos más unidos con la serie y el amor familiar que tanto resalta. Estas escenas le otorgan a Never Have I Ever un toque más profundo y adulto en la cantidad adecuada para balancear las escenas de comedia.

Sus episodios finales son, de verdad, oro puro pues están cargados de un peso emocional que nos destroza el corazón y nos deja esperando con ansias su segunda temporada (que aún no he tenido oportunidad de ver). Les recomiendo esta serie si necesitan algo refrescante y divertido y, aunque su premisa no sea la más llamativa entre otros títulos, puede darles una agradable sorpresa si le dan la oportunidad.

Never Have I Ever posee ligeras discusiones sobre sexo, pero sigue siendo una serie muy family-friendly.
