Recently, I had the opportunity to re-watch *Never Let Me Go*, a film adaptation of a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro that I decided to read a year ago, of which I have fond memories. I don't intend to write spoilers, because I feel that the best way to enjoy this movie is to watch it without being very clear about what it's about, but I'd like to try to explain what you can expect.

Never Let Me Go is directed by Mark Romanek and is a look into the past and future of the long friendship between Kathy, Tommy and Ruth, three children who spend the first part of their lives at a seemingly perfect school called Hailsham. Before coming of age, one of their teachers, Miss Lucy, reveals to them the disturbing reason for their very existence and what their purpose in life has always been, even if they didn't know it.

I don't want to take away one of the most powerful parts of the film, but I can tell you that it manages to move us and make us feel sorry for these characters as they face complex feelings of jealousy, rage, love, betrayal and a giant frustration of not being in control of their own lives. It''s the idea that really their whole lives are tied from birth to plans that they never had the chance to say no to; drowning as the years go by and clinging to anyone who might bring them the peace they need.

Never Let Me Go doesn't explain every little aspect of their world, but rather leaves us to think and have a sense that we know something, but without being entirely sure what. Because I had read the book, the first time around I could understand the little things the movie leaves unsaid but they're nothing very important to the plot.

The cast of this film are, for the most part, actors we can easily recognize today. For example, two of the co-stars are Andrew Garfield and my favorite Keira Knightley; although I'm not familiar with their work, Carey Mulligan fills her role perfectly. We'll get a glimpse of Domhnall Gleeson, whom I remember fondly from his performance in About Time, and Shape of Water lead star Sally Hawkins will play Miss Lucy.

The director manages to mix romance with a little touch of science fiction and mystery; he shows us the ordinary life that disguises the atrocity behind the existence of these characters. The setting and scenarios evoke a real world, not unlike our own, leaving us with the feeling that this fiction may become real in the future. The thought alone gives me chills.

Although I consider it a memorable film, its pacing is slow and it lacks strong dramatic tension, so the audience may lose interest. However for me, it made for a smooth, interesting and introspective journey into the story of three people who do their best to feel that they're captains of their own destiny. Yet I couldn't help but feel that the film was whispering a little secret to me, and I wish there were more people to share it with.

At the end, Kathy closes the film with a line that stuck in my mind and I think it perfectly describes the feeling Never Let Me Go leaves us with with its ending:

Never Let Me Go está dirigida por Mark Romanek y es una vista al pasado y futuro de la larga amistad entre Kathy, Tommy y Ruth, tres niños que pasan la primera parte de su vida en una escuela aparentemente perfecta llamada Hailsham. Antes de llegar a la mayoría de edad, una de sus maestras, Miss Lucy, les revela la perturbadora razón de su existencia misma y cúal siempre ha sido su propósito en la vida, aunque no lo supieran.

No quiero arrebatarles una de las partes más impactantes de la película, pero les puedo decir que nos logra conmover y sentir pena por estos personajes mientras enfrentan sentimientos complejos de celos, furia, amor, traición y una frustración gigante de no tener control de sus propias vidas. Es la idea de que realmente sus vidas están sujetas desde que nacen a planes que nunca tuvieron la oportunidad de decir que no; ahogándose mientras los años pasan y aferrándose a cualquier persona que pueda suponer la paz que necesitan.

Never Let Me Go no explica cada mínimo aspecto de su mundo, sino que deja que pensemos y tengamos una sensación de que sabemos algo, pero sin estar del todo seguros de qué. Por el hecho de haber leído el libro, la primera vez pude entender las pequeñas cosas que dejan sin decir pero no son nada muy importante para la trama.

El cast de esta película son, en mayoría, actores que hoy podemos reconocer con facilidad. Por ejemplo, dos de los coprotagonistas son Andrew Garfield y mi favorita Keira Knightley; aunque no estoy familiarizada con su trabajo, Carey Mulligan cumple su papel a la perfección. Tendremos un vistazo a Domhnall Gleeson, a quien recuerdo con cariño en su actuación en About Time, y la estrella principal de Shape of Water, Sally Hawkins, interpretará a Miss Lucy.

El director logra mezclar el romance con un pequeño toque de ciencia ficción y misterio; nos muestra la vida ordinaria que disfraza la atrocidad que hay detrás de la existencia de estos personajes. La ambientación y los escenarios evocan un mundo real, no muy distinto al nuestro, lo que nos deja con la sensación de que esta ficción puede llegar a ser real en un futuro. La sola idea me da escalofríos.

A pesar de que considero que es una película memorable, su ritmo es lento y no tiene una tensión dramática fuerte, por lo que la audiencia puede perder el interés. Para mí, sin embargo, supuso un viaje suave, interesante e introspectivo hacia la historia de tres personas que hacen lo que pueden para sentir que son capitanes de su propio destino. No pude evitar sentir que la película me estaba susurrando un pequeño secreto y quisiera que hubiera más personas con quienes compartirlo.

Al final, Kathy cierra la película con una frase que se me quedó grabada en la mente y creo que describe perfectamente la sensación en que nos deja Never Let Me Go con su final:
