When I saw the trailer for The Haunting of Hill House, I had to put it down on my list of series to watch, as it promised an interesting story. I'm not a fan of the horror genre, but I took a chance on this TV show and, to this day, I still recommend it to whomever I can.

While waiting for its release, I read twice (in both English and Spanish) the book from which the TV show is based, because the book itself was something different from anything I had read before. As the TV show is inspired by it, we can find small references to it that are brief, but sublime, for us readers. However, it's not necessary to have read it, as the TV show follows a slightly different linear story and truth be told, I'm happy that's the way it is.

You see, The Haunting of Hill House is about a family broken and separated by the events they experienced in a certain mansion years ago, traumatizing them, in such a way, that they became estranged from each other. The reason for the reunion of these siblings after so many years is really tragic: the youngest, Nessy, committed suicide in the same mansion where her mother did. It is here that they will once again face their childhood fears and relive the events of that tragic night, where they lost much more than just their mom.

In The Haunting of Hill House, we will have two cleverly overlapping timelines: in the first, we are shown the aforementioned family just moved into a mansion that hasn't been lived in for a long time and has been said to be haunted (like every horror movie); and the second timeline, where we will see how living in that mansion impacted their lives and relationships in adulthood.

The horror in The Haunting of Hill House doesn't lie in jumpscares or terrifying apparitions, nor in grotesque makeup and huge amounts of blood (although it doesn't mean that we don't find it in this TV show), but the reason why it scares us is because of the way in which we are told the story of Hill House, a mansion that hides its own ghosts and whose secrets we will not know completely, and how the family, despite not having set foot in the mansion in years, are affected as if they had never left it and slowly go crazy.

The scenery, music and sets are beautifully planned for this purpose, to keep us on our toes for any clues to the story of Hill house and it is, therefore, that in several scenes we can catch some ghost in the background, someone without any relevance to the story but, just having in mind that it exists and is there in the background, makes the hair on the back of our necks stand on end.

One of my favorite episodes is number 6 and it is in this episode that we see the exquisite planning that this TV show had. The filmmakers overlapped both timelines, a night where the children suffer the terror of a storm at Hill house and the night of Nessy's wake, where a storm is also occurring. This gave The Haunting of Hill House the perfect opportunity to surprise us with the acting of the actors and the special effects.

There are more things of which The Haunting of Hill House is excellent and I feel like this post will fall short before explaining it as it should, but this series was a before and after in terms of my look at the horror genre and I realized that, as long as it's told like Hill House, I can come to love it as much as any other romance movie.

Cuando vi el trailer de The Haunting of Hill House, la tuve que anotar en mi lista de series por ver, pues prometía una historia interesante. No soy fan del género de terror, pero me arriesgué con esta serie y, hasta el día de hoy, la sigo recomendando a quien pueda.

Mientras esperaba su lanzamiento, leí dos veces (tanto en inglés como en español) el libro del cual la serie está basada, porque el libro en sí era algo diferente a todo lo que había leído antes. Como la serie está inspirada en el mismo, podremos encontrar pequeñas referencias a este que resultan breves, pero sublimes, para nosotros los lectores. Sin embargo, no es necesario haberlo leído, pues la serie sigue una historia lineal un poco distinta y la verdad, estoy feliz de que sea así.

Verán, The Haunting of Hill House trata sobre una familia rota y separada por los sucesos que vivieron en cierta mansión hace años, traumatizandolos, de tal forma, que se alejaron unos de los otros. La razón para la reunión de estos hermanos después de tantos años es realmente trágica: la menor, Nessy, se suicidó en la misma mansión en la que su mamá lo hizo. Es aquí donde volverán a enfrentar sus miedos de la infancia y revivir los eventos de aquella trágica noche, donde perdieron mucho más que a su madre.

En The Haunting of Hill House, tendremos dos líneas temporales inteligentemente superpuestas: en la primera, nos muestran a la susodicha familia recién mudada a una mansión que no ha sido habitada por mucho tiempo y de la que se ha dicho que está embrujada (como toda película de horror); y la segunda línea temporal, donde veremos cómo vivir en esa mansión repercutió en sus vidas y relaciones en la adultez.

El horror en The Haunting of Hill House no radica en jumpscares o apariciones terroríficas, tampoco en maquillaje grotesco y cantidades enormes de sangre (aunque no significa que no lo encontremos en esta serie), sino que la razón por la que nos da miedo es por la manera en qué nos cuentan la historia de Hill House, una mansión que esconde sus propios fantasmas y cuyos secretos no sabremos por completo, y cómo la familia, a pesar de no haber pisado la mansión en años, son afectados como si nunca se hubieran alejado de ella y enloquecen poco a poco.

Los paisajes, la música y los sets están hermosamente planificados con este propósito, para mantenernos atentos a cualquier pista de la historia de Hill house y es, por ello, que en varias escenas podemos captar algún fantasma de fondo, alguien sin ninguna relevancia en la historia pero, con solo tener en mente de que existe y está ahí en el fondo, nos pone los pelos de punta.

Uno de mis episodios favoritos es el número 6 y es en este episodio que vemos la planificación exquisita que tuvo esta serie. Los directores superpusieron ambas líneas temporales, una noche donde los niños sufren el terror de una tormenta en Hill house y la noche del velorio de Nessy, donde también está ocurriendo una tormenta. Esto le dio a The Haunting of Hill House la oportunidad perfecta para sorprendernos con la actuación de los actores y los efectos especiales.

Existen más cosas de las cuales The Haunting of Hill House es excelente y siento que este post se quedará corto antes de explicarlo como se debe, pero esta serie fue un antes y después en cuanto a mi mirada en el género del terror y me di cuenta que, mientras esté contado como en Hill House, puedo llegar a amarlo como a cualquier otra película de romance.
