What makes Peaky Blinders so appealing?

I've always wondered how it's possible that a TV show as violent (at least, for me), as Peaky Blinders is, can be so appealing to the audience, to the point where you can stop watching it only when you've reached the last episode. Watching the TV show again with this question in mind, I've been able to draw a few (but telling) conclusions.

By this point in the year, most people will have heard of Peaky Blinders but, for those who haven't, let me give you a little summary.

Peaky Blinders is a TV show about a gangster family, set in 1900s England. Its protagonists are Thomas Shelby and his two brothers, who return to Birmingham after military service during World War II. They own a family gangster gang called Peaky Blinders that controls the entire city of Birmingham, based on gambling and offering protection to the businesses there.

The mastermind behind all these operations is undoubtedly Thomas Shelby, the second eldest of the brothers who, because of his ambition and aspirations, plans to create an empire beyond Birmingham, and whose new enemy is Chief Inspector Chester Campbell. It is here that a war for control of the city begins and there is no time when we are sure who will win, for both sides have much to lose.

Coming back to the question of why this series has caused such a stir in the world, let me show you the answers.

The TV show is based on a real criminal gang, although they were much more violent than the one we see in the series and which distinguished themselves by sewing razor blades into their berets to blind and injure in their numerous altercations. This gives the series a historical context that is interesting to discover.

One of the attractions of Peaky Blinders is its premise as it is not only shaped by violence and illegal gambling, but grips us with the Shelby family's loyalty, forbidden loves, spies, betrayals we didn't see coming and, of course, jaw-dropping deaths.

The Peaky Blinders outfits would once have struck us as embarrassing, but this series has managed to make them synonymous with good taste and a lot of style. The haircuts of the male characters have become a fashion icon for that very reason.

Visually, Peaky Blinders doesn't look like any other TV shows, as the colors and contrasts of each episode give it a film-like feel that, truth be told, is fascinating in its aesthetics. We have slow motion moments on several occasions and that, to my surprise, do not cease to be epic every time they appear.

The Peaky Blinders soundtrack is exquisite, the perfect example of this is the series' theme song, Red Right Hand. At the very least, you should give their soundtrack a chance, which includes tracks with Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes and other artists.

Independent and strong female characters is always something I look for in the TV shows I watch and I'm so glad to know that, from the very first episode, they are present in Peaky Blinders. Aunt Pol is everyone's favorite character for many reasons and one of them is her cleverness in every dialogue and scene she's involved in, the others you'll have to find out by yourselves.

. The three brothers complement each other perfectly, with Thomas being the brains, John the brute force and Arthur the passionate and wild heart. Because of their military pasts, we will witness post-traumatic episodes, giving each of them a raw and real emotional depth.

Although Tommy is our protagonist, Arthur Shelby is ultimately one of the best characters in Peaky Blinders. He is a very volatile person that will lead us to hate him, pity him and, to be honest, love him. In the following seasons they explore his personality more and we will end up with mixed feelings.

Thomas Shelby is the most appealing element of Peaky Blinders and, I don't mean because of Cillian Murphy's incredible looks, but because of his elegance and charisma. No matter how horrible the things he's done out of ambition, you'll always find a reason to forgive him.

And finally, it's the shortness of this particular TV show that leaves us thirsting for more. Peaky Blinders has 5 seasons and each has 6 episodes. Its sixth season will be out in early 2022, so you still have time to catch up and become part of the Peaky Blinders!

Siempre me he preguntado cómo es posible que una serie tan violenta (al menos, para mí), como lo es Peaky Blinders, pueda ser tan atractiva al público, al punto donde la puedes dejar de ver sólo cuando has llegado al último episodio. Mirando la serie otra vez con esta pregunta en mente, he podido sacar unas pocas (pero contundentes) conclusiones.

Para este punto del año, la mayoría de las personas habrá escuchado de Peaky Blinders pero, para aquellos que no lo han hecho, déjenme hacerles un pequeño resumen.

Peaky Blinders es una serie sobre una familia gangster, ambientada en los años 1900 de Inglaterra. Sus protagonistas son Thomas Shelby y sus dos hermanos, quienes regresan a Birmingham después de prestar servicio militar durante la segunda guerra mundial. Son dueños de una banda de gangster familiar llamada Peaky Blinders que controla toda la ciudad de Birmingham, a base de apuestas y ofreciendo protección a los negocios que allí se encuentran.

El cerebro detrás de todas estas operaciones es, sin duda, Thomas Shelby, el segundo mayor de los hermanos quien, por su ambición y aspiraciones, planea crear un imperio más allá de Birmingham, y cuyo nuevo enemigo es el inspector en jefe Chester Campbell. Es aquí donde comienza una guerra por el control de la ciudad y no hay momento en el que estemos seguros de quién ganará, pues ambos bandos tienen mucho que perder.

Volviendo a la pregunta del por qué esta serie ha causado tanto revuelo en el mundo, permítanme mostrarles las respuestas.

La serie de televisión está basada en una pandilla criminal real, aunque era mucho más violenta que la que vemos en la serie y los cuales se distinguían por coser hojillas de afeitar en sus boinas para cegar y lastimar en sus numerosos altercados. Esto le otorga a la serie un contexto histórico que resulta interesante de descubrir.

Uno de los atractivos de Peaky Blinders es su premisa pues no solo se conforma de violencia y apuestas ilegales, sino que nos atrapa con la lealtad de la familia Shelby, amores prohibidos, espías, traiciones que no vimos venir y, por supuesto, muertes que nos dejan boquiabiertos.

La vestimenta de los Peaky Blinders en otro momento nos habría parecido vergonzoso, pero esta serie ha logrado que sea sinónimo de buen gusto y mucho estilo. Los cortes de cabellos de los personajes masculinos se han vuelto un icono de la moda por esa misma razón.

Visualmente, Peaky Blinders no parece una serie de televisión como cualquier otra, pues los colores y contrastes de cada episodio le dan un aire a película que, a decir verdad, resulta fascinante por su estética. Tenemos momentos de cámara lenta en varias ocasiones y que, para mi sorpresa, no dejan de ser épicos cada vez que aparecen.

El soundtrack de Peaky Blinders es exquisito, el perfecto ejemplo de esto es el tema principal de la serie, Red Right Hand. Por lo menos, deberían darle una oportunidad a su banda sonora, que incluye temas con Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes y demás artistas.

Los personajes femeninos independientes y fuertes siempre es algo que busco en las series que veo y me alegro mucho saber que, desde el primer episodio, están presentes en Peaky Blinders. La tía Pol es el personaje favorito de todos por muchas razones y una de ellas es su astucia en cada diálogo y escena en la que está involucrada, las demás lo tendrás que describir tú.

. Los tres hermanos se complementan perfectamente, siendo Thomas el cerebro, John la fuerza bruta y Arthur el corazón apasionado y salvaje. Debido a sus pasados militares, seremos testigos de episodios post-traumáticos, lo que le otorga a cada uno de ellos una profundidad emocional cruda y real.

Aunque Tommy sea nuestro protagonista, Arthur Shelby es, en definitiva, uno de los mejores personajes de Peaky Blinders. Es una persona muy volátil que nos llevará a odiarlo, a compadecerlo y, para ser honestos, a amarlo. En las temporadas siguientes exploran más su personalidad y terminaremos con sentimientos encontrados.

Thomas Shelby es el elemento más atractivo de Peaky Blinders y, no me refiero por la increíble apariencia de Cillian Murphy, sino por su elegancia y carisma. No importa qué tan horribles son las cosas que ha hecho por ambición, siempre encontrarás una razón para perdonarlo.

Y, por último, es lo corto de la serie lo que nos deja sedientos por más. Peaky Blinders tiene 5 temporadas y cada una cuenta con 6 episodios. Su sexta temporada saldrá a principios del 2022, ¡aún tienen tiempo de ponerse al día y volverse parte de los Peaky Blinders!
