What does Good Will Hunting teach us?

Review by @galistea · 1619d · of Good Will Hunting

These past few days, I've been a bit nostalgic and melancholic; in general, I haven't had a good week. It's for that reason that I'm going back to watching my comfort movies that always manage to motivate me and lift my spirits. A little while ago I told you about *Dead Poets Society*, today I want to tell you about an equally old movie: *Good Will Hunting*, directed by Gus Van Sant and released in 1998 (a little curiosity, that's the year my older brother was born).

Image20.png

. # We begin with the introduction to our protagonist, Will Hunting, who is practically a genius with great intellectual abilities who chooses to work in professions such as laborer or janitor. This young man, instead of looking for opportunities to take advantage of his potential, decides to use his wit and intelligence to conquer college girls with his friends and humiliate any pretentious guy with his knowledge. On one of these nights he meets Skylar, a student who leaves him enchanted.

Image17.png

His life changes when he finds a complex mathematical problem on one of the blackboards in the halls of the university where he works as a janitor; he solves it anonymously out of pure curiosity and leisure. When Professor Gerald Lambeau, in his efforts to find out the identity of the person who solved the problem, returns to leave another challenge that took him and his colleagues 2 years to prove. That' s when he discovers Will Hunting solve it in one day.

Professor Gerald decides to bring out this young man's potential and, after noticing that he is troubled and rebellious, seeks therapists to help him deal with Will; the only one willing to accept the challenge is Sean Maguire, a sloppy-looking but wise man.

. This film is full of renowned actors such as, for example, Matt Damon, who shines in his role as a troubled young man as his performance in the strongest scenes left me speechless. As always, Robin Williams, gives us an excellent performance and it is his character who moves us and we are able to sympathize with him. The Affleck brothers, Casey and Ben, make us laugh in their scenes; Stellan Skarsgård brings back good memories and, finally, Minnie Driver offers us the role of a young woman with a future who tries to make her boyfriend have one too.

Image13.png

Good Will Hunting doesn't feel pretentious, it's a film that manages to move us and every interaction between the characters feels real and genuine. The childhood relationship between Chuckie (Ben Affleck) and Will is full of chemistry and feels real, as if they really are lifelong friends. We can't leave without mentioning how the real sibling relationship between Ben and Casey give that genuine touch to their dynamic on the big screen.

There are two favorite scenes I have in Good Will Hunting that teach us two different, but related, things:

Not everything is about being somebody in life

In this scene Professor Gerald runs out of patience with Will, as he just wastes every opportunity he has offered him, as if he is laughing at him, but Sean tries to assure the professor that this is not the case, that Will is really using his defense mechanism. The performance by Stellan and Robin Williams is incredible and this scene perfectly represents the argument between ego and soul.

On one side we have Gerald who insists that Will be a great academic, for he sees in him that facility in problem solving, that innate intelligence that he strived to achieve all his life. To witness how someone can achieve in a week what you've worked for years is frustrating, especially when that person doesn't take advantage of it.

But it''s Sean who wants Will to be more than that, to be a better person. Living life isn't all about being great, excellent or recognized; life is about being happy, about healing, about loving. To feel. He notices in Will that he pushes away all those who are good to him before they have a chance to leave him, he discovers in him a hurt and fearful child.

And rather than wanting to make that child successful, he wants to make that child happy.

If you don't heal your traumas, you probably won't be happy

The thing I find interesting about this particular film is that the protagonist is a young man who is able to solve without much difficulty any math problem put in front of him, except for the emptiness and pain left by his childhood. His only solution he could see was to defend himself at all costs, to love and feel loved, hiding in books and in his arrogant and ''I don't give a damn'' charade. There' s a line from Sean that explains this clearly:

You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much.

.

Good Will Hunting shows us how the traumas of the past can hold us back, not allowing us to see beyond what we can achieve. They stop us. The healthiest thing to do is always to talk about it, at least that's the first step. Being open and trusting about one of the things that hurts us deeply inside scares us, terrifies us. However, not talking about it, not seeking help will do us more harm than good in the long run.

If you' re going through a difficult time, it may be that watching this film will make you realize that seeking help is the best thing you can do for yourself, whether it's talking to a professional, a friend, a family member or your partner. I know it's hard, but you are important and you deserve to feel happy, calm. Talking about it won't solve your problems, but it will help you get one step closer to making it happen.

Imagen13.png

Imagen15.png

Si no sanas tus traumas, probablemente no serás feliz

.
