Shadow and Bone was the most popular TV show at the time and, for me, it was somewhat enjoyable because I craved a little taste of fantasy, but there were details that didn't quite convince me. I want to clarify that I have not read the books of this saga, so I am speaking from my point of view exclusively of the TV show.
First, because of how vast the world of Shadow and Bone seems to be, 8 episodes were not enough to explore these complex aspects we needed from the characters and their cultures. For example, when we see the constant racism that Alina suffers because she is half Shu we don't understand why, we don't know the origin of this hatred (justified or not), only that it was an "enemy" race. Therefore, it does not have the impact that I imagine the creator of the TV show wanted to provoke and, not having that impact, we fail to sympathize completely with Alina.
I'm sure I wasn't the only one confused by the whole geopolitical aspect of the TV show, not understanding exactly what the conflict between Ravka and the old country was. When the characters were discussing their travel or raiding plans, I failed to understand how long it took them to travel such a distance or which places they had to go through first.
It lacked that breathing room between scenes that gave the characters time to internalize their problems. I kept waiting for a scene where Alina will face the fact that all her cartographer friends died because of her, as she was the one who burned all the maps and dragged them to their own doom in her eagerness to accompany Mal.
After so much preamble of Inej's stubborn rejection of murder for his religion, all we see when he first kills an Inferni to save Kaz is a face of tragedy and that's it. Shadow and Bone had the perfect opportunity to show us an Inej in crisis and confused because she went against her own principles, having to face the penance her religion imposed on her in this kind of situation.
I don't know if I'm the only one who doesn't make sense of this, but let's see. Barghra, Kirigan's mother and popular teacher of the Grisha, is the only one who knows that her son is the Black Heretic and that he assumes new identities over the years. So how is it that Kirilan allowed his long-awaited Sun Summoner to have contact with Barghra, knowing that his own mother strongly disagrees with his methods and could potentially tell Alina the truth? It was inevitable that the latter would oppose him after learning that he created The Shadow, so it seems illogical to me that Kirigan would consent to these private lessons. Yes, it may be that he was so arrogant and confident of his power over Alina that he had no doubt that Alina would always side with him; it's also possible that he trusted his mother completely but for some reason I doubt this (we don't see them interacting together at all until Alina escapes). So this whole sudden revelation by Barghra that Kirigan is the Black Heretic seemed questionable to me and very easy on the plot.

Nina and Matthias' storyline felt left over and pointless to the main plot, but I guess it was included to lay the groundwork for the next season.
I know love gives incredible strength, but how could Mal, with wounds on him and only his fists, beat an immortal being with the power to control shadows? I won't deny that there was some tension in how this fight would turn out, but it would have seemed like a better challenge if Alina was Kirigan's opponent.

| Despite these details, you can still enjoy the TV series, and while its ending wasn't the most compelling of all, I'm curious to see what its second season will have in store for us. |

Shadow and Bone fue la serie más popular en su momento y, para mí, supuso algo placentero porque ansiaba una pequeña muestra de fantasía, pero hubo detalles que no me convencieron del todo. Quiero aclarar que no he leído los libros de esta saga, por lo que estoy hablando desde mi punto de vista exclusivamente de la serie.
Primero, por lo extenso que parece ser el mundo de Shadow and Bone, 8 episodios no fueron suficientes para explorar estos aspectos complejos que necesitábamos de los personajes y sus culturas. Por ejemplo, cuando vemos el constante racismo que sufre Alina por ser media Shu no entendemos por qué, no sabemos el origen de este odio (justificado o no), únicamente que fue una raza "enemiga". Por lo tanto, no tiene el impacto que me imagino que el creador de la serie quería provocar y, al no tener ese impacto, no logramos simpatizar por completo con Alina.
Estoy segura que no fui la única confundida por todo el aspecto geopolítico de la serie, sin entender exactamente cuál era el conflicto entre Ravka y el viejo país. Cuando los personajes discutían sus planes de viaje o de asalto, no lograba comprender el tiempo que les tomaba recorrer tal distancia o por cuáles lugares tenían que pasar primero.
Faltó ese respiro entre escenas que les daba tiempo a los personajes de internalizar sus problemas. Me quedé esperando una escena donde Alina afrontará el hecho de que todos sus amigos cartógrafos murieron por su culpa, pues fue ella quien quemó todos los mapas y los arrastró a su propia perdición en su afán de acompañar a Mal.
Después de tanto preámbulo del obstinado rechazo de Inej hacia el asesinato por su religión, lo único que vemos cuando mata por primera vez a un Inferni para salvar a Kaz es un rostro de tragedia y ya. Shadow and Bone tuvo la oportunidad perfecta de mostrarnos una Inej en crisis y confundida porque fue en contra de sus propios principios, teniendo que afrontar la penitencia que su religión le imponía en este tipo de situaciones.
No sé si soy la única a la que no le encuentra sentido a esto, pero veamos. Barghra, la madre de Kirigan y popular profesora de los Grisha, es la única que sabe que su hijo es el Hereje Negro y que asume nuevas identidades a traves de los años. Entonces, ¿cómo es que Kirilan permitió que su tan esperada Invocadora del Sol tuviera contacto con Barghra, sabiendo que su propia madre está en total desacuerdo con sus métodos y que podría potencialmente decirle la verdad a Alina? Era inevitable que ésta se opusiera a él después de enterarse que creó La Sombra, así que me parece ilógico que Kirigan consintiera estas clases particulares. Sí, puede ser que fuera tan arrogante y seguro de su poder sobre Alina que no dudó en que esta siempre se pondría a su favor; también es posible que confiara por completo en su madre pero, por alguna razón, dudo de esto (no los vemos interactuar juntos en absoluto hasta que Alina escapa). Así que todo esta relevación repentina por parte de Barghra de que Kirigan es el Hereje Negro me pareció cuestionable y muy fácil para la trama.
La historia de Nina y Matthias se sintió de sobra y sin sentido para la trama principal, pero supongo que fue incluida para sentar las bases de la próxima temporada.
Sé que el amor da fuerzas increíbles, pero ¿cómo Mal, con heridas encima y solo sus puños, pudo ganarle a un ser inmortal con el poder de controlar las sombras? No voy a negar que hubo cierta tensión en cómo sería el resultado de esta pelea, pero me hubiese parecido un mejor desafío si Alina fuera la contrincante de Kirigan.
