Hello, gods and goddesses of Olympus!
Big Little Lies is a miniseries that left the world fascinated in 2017 and, truth be told, it had it well deserved because of how incredible its story was and, especially, because of the tremendous acting of its cast. However, as the end of the first season approached, I ended up deeply disappointed and I can assure that several will disagree with me.
The premise seemed interesting to me because of the potential for strong female characters as it focuses on the lives of 5 women, mothers of families and the complicated relationship that arose between them. We are first introduced to Madeline, who is dealing with the feeling that her children are more independent than she expected, while her relationship with her husband Ed falls into decline for reasons we will discover; adding to this the recent initiative taken by her ex-husband Nathan and his partner Bonnie to become more involved in the children's lives.
Then we will see Celeste with a reputation of being a perfect mother and a happy wife, but who behind the scenes hides a stormy relationship with her handsome and 'loving' husband Perry.
And we have Renata, whose daughter appears to be being assaulted by Jane's only son, a single mother who has just moved into the neighborhood and who, we'll soon find out, is dealing with something much darker and more devastating inside.
During the whole season (of only 7 episodes) we are shown scenes of interrogation and testimonies, because there has been a murder whose victim and perpetrator we will only discover in the last episode. While that may have been the idea, I didn't have to watch much to guess the ending, which was obvious and, while satisfying, was one of the reasons for my disappointment.
The characters that saved this series were ultimately Celeste and Jane, as it is their stories that touch us the most and the way the actresses successfully play them is another plus. These characters have a lot of emotional baggage that won't be easy to resolve and it's that slow, unsure unraveling that makes us look forward to their next scene.
One of the things I loved about Big Little Lies and that, in the end, ended up being the main reason for my dislike, were the numerous subplots that provided more complexity and depth to the relationships between the characters. It was something very attractive to watch but, to our misfortune, they left a lot of things up in the air and wasted the tension they had created, forgetting about them and leading us to a predictable ending without all those incredible events that could have offered a better climax to the series.
And is that the ending was no big deal, because, in my opinion, it was just a solution fallen from the sky that solved all the problems of the characters and it was so rushed that we did not have time to process. Victim and Perpetrator is not a jaw-dropping surprise but in case you want to see it, I won't do spoilers.
The first season is worth watching for the incredible casting, full of women who know how to play the deep aspects of their respective characters; and the beautiful setting is what gives Big Little Lies an alluring and mesmerizing visual allure.

The presence of the great Meryl Streep may be reason enough to give the second season a chance, and I may someday, but for now I'm in no hurry to take the risk of finding myself disappointed.

Big Little Lies es una miniserie que dejó fascinado al mundo en el 2017 y, a decir verdad, lo tuvo bien merecido por lo increíble de su historia y, en especial, por la tremenda actuación de su reparto. Sin embargo, al acercarse el final de la primera temporada, terminé profundamente decepcionada de la serie y puedo asegurar que varios no estarán de acuerdo conmigo.
La premisa me parecía interesante por el potencial de personajes femeninos fuertes pues se enfoca en la vida de 5 mujeres, madres de familia y la relación complicada que surgía entre ellas. Se nos presenta primero a Madeline, quien lidia con la sensación de que sus hijos son más independientes de lo que ella esperaba, mientras su relación con su esposo Ed cae en declive por razones que iremos descubriendo; sumándole a esto la reciente iniciativa que tomó su ex esposo Nathan y su pareja Bonnie para involucrarse más en la vida de los niños.
Luego veremos a Celeste con fama de ser una madre perfecta y una esposa feliz, pero que en detrás de escenas oculta una relación tormentosa con su apuesto y cariñoso esposo Perry.
Y tenemos a Renata, cuya hija parece estar siendo agredida por el único hijo de Jane, una madre soltera recién mudada al vecindario que, pronto nos daremos cuenta, está lidiando con algo mucho más oscuro y devastador en su interior.
Durante toda la temporada (de tan solo 7 episodios) nos muestran escenas de interrogatorio y testimonios, pues ha ocurrido un asesinato cuya victima y perpetrador solo descubriremos en el ultimo episodio. Aunque esa haya sido la idea, no tuve que ver mucho para adivinar el final, el cual resultaba obvio y, aunque satisfactorio, fue una de las razones de mi decepción.
Los personajes que salvaron esta serie fueron, en definitiva, Celeste y Jane, pues son sus historias las que más nos conmueven y la manera en cómo las actrices las interpretan con éxito es otro punto a favor. Estos personajes tienen mucha carga emocional que no será fácil de resolver y es ese desenvolvimiento lento e inseguro lo que nos hace esperar con ansias su siguiente escena.
Una de las cosas que me encantó de Big Little Lies y que, al final, terminaron por ser la razón principal de mi disgusto, fueron las numerosas subtramas que le proveían más complejidad y profundidad a las relaciones entre los personajes. Era algo muy atractivo de ver pero, para nuestra mala fortuna, dejaron muchas cosas al aire y desperdiciaron esa tensión que habían creado, olvidándose de ellas y llevándonos a un final predecible sin todas esos increíbles eventos que le pudieron ofrecer un mejor clímax a la serie.
Y es que el final no fue la gran cosa, pues, a mi parecer, solo fue una solución caída del cielo que resolvía todos los problemas de los personajes y fue tan apresurado que no tuvimos tiempo de procesar. La víctima y el perpetrador no es una sorpresa que nos deja boquiabiertos pero, por si desean verla, no haré spoilers.
Vale la pena ver la primera temporada por el increíble casting, llena de mujeres que saben interpretar los profundos aspectos de sus respectivos personajes; y la hermosa ambientación es lo que le otorga a Big Little Lies un encanto visual atractivo e hipnotizante.
La presencia de la grandiosa Meryl Streep puede ser razón suficiente para darle una oportunidad a la segunda temporada y puede que algún día lo haga, pero por ahora no tengo prisa en tomar el riesgo de verme decepcionada.
