Welcome, gods and goddesses of Olympus!
Today I'm very excited to tell you about one of my favorite tv shows of all times: Switched at Birth. It's a TV show that, for the few times I could talk about it, it's not very well known, but it definitely deserves more attention for all the topics it talks about. I discovered it because, when I came home from classes, I always found myself with the final part of their episodes and, with the little I could see, was that I took more interest in this tv show and thus encourage me to see it complete.
In this post I will be explaining to you how it tackles certain themes of great importance, in a way that makes it more remarkable and different than other teen drama series. Let me start, then, with a brief summary of the series:
Bay Kennish is the daughter of a famous professional athlete and now well-known car wash owner, John Kennish, and Kathryn. While these may be the facts, Bay always felt different from her blonde, perfect family, who are more athletically inclined because of John and don't look kindly on the art Bay creates in her shop. It was after one class that she began to have real doubts about it and, that's how she finds out, through a test, that she ended up with the wrong family. It turns out that, being a newborn, she was mistakenly given to the Kennish family instead of her real family.
Of course, both families agree to meet and this is where we meet Bay's biological mother, Regina Vasquez, who is a single mother who raised, along with her mother, Daphne, a teenager who is deaf from an infection she had as a child. Regina's financial problems give the Kennish family a reason to take them into their home so they can start making up for lost time.
The first season basically deals with how both families cope with the emotional shock of discovering that their biological daughter was living with the wrong person, and also explores the tension that arises from the parents' cultural and financial differences.
One of the reasons that makes this show so different from others is Daphne's deafness, which teaches us in each of the seasons about society's ignorance of the deaf and hard of hearing community. This show stands out, beyond the teenage and family drama, for the use of sign language and the measures that both deaf and hearing people around them must take, so that they can have a life in a society that has not adapted to them. At first, we will only have Daphne and her family using sign language, but Daphne encourages the Kennish to learn it, so they can better connect with her and her culture.
Bay Kennish decides to change the high school that Daphne attends, which is a specialized institution called Carlton School For The Deaf, so this contributes to us having a different environment from the one we are shown in other teen series. We will be able to see the difficulties that Bay presents with the change of environment and how she adapts to having to learn to speak fluent sign language.
There is a balanced amount of deaf characters with hearing characters, which adds a thousand points to this show because it doesn't just include a single character because of their disability to make it an inclusive series, but we are introduced to a whole community of characters, with whom we learn the obstacles they have to overcome and Switched at Birth really creates awareness from it.
Although I have to admit that the show has its dramatic moments between both families and includes, of course, the rebelliousness of both teenage girls; instead of tiring us out, it gives us thrills and chills.

Obviously, we will have various romantic interests for our protagonists and other characters.
In the later seasons, Switched at Birth becomes more serious when it tells us about rape in college environments and its consequences, it shows us in a real way how it affects the characters involved. I really liked this aspect of the series, because it teaches us the importance of consent when getting intimate with another person.
We also deal with the death of a character (although, for my taste, it was rushed), which gives it an equally serious and deep touch, and we get to explore the characters' feelings about it and how they handle the sudden loss of a family member.
Switched at Birth It also covers political issues regarding the deaf and hard-of-hearing community and with racism, including in its final season several awareness-raising protests that didn't really feel forced but, rather, necessary.
. Although I knew at some point I would run out of episodes to watch, to my discontent, the ending of Switched at Birth was not exactly what I expected, I felt the series could have gone further and addressed more issues through Bay and Daphne, but it culminated with its 5th season in 2017, due to ''low ratings'' (since critics have hailed it as part of the top cable shows) but several communities feel that the reason for its cancellation was the tone and path Switched at Birth was taking.
Switched at Birth is a fairly family-friendly show; however, it does possess discussion of rape in one of its seasons.
