Pablo Escobar is undoubtedly one of the most recognized mobsters in the world, especially for all the chaos and discomfort he caused in a country submerged in a criminal conflict that marked for many decades its development. Around Pablo Escobar dozens of series and films have been made because his story beyond being grotesque for the history of Colombia is extremely entertaining and addictive to watch, however recently I came across a film that uses all the conflict caused by Pablo Escobar to give life to a love story between two people totally opposite, two young people who fell in love and who were overwhelmed by the political conflict originated by Pablo Escobar.
With Escobar: Paradise Lost I had several conflicting feelings because despite being a story constructed in a very precise way through an atmosphere perfectly developed to note the different political and criminal contrasts that affected a country from the criminal actions of a man, is a somewhat flimsy and without force that does not finish establishing the two plots that develop in the film. This film focuses its plot on the love story of two young people who fall madly in love by chance, two humble, innocent young people who just wanted to be happy, two young people who are dragged to the center of a power game by criminals and politicians. In this film, we basically have a young American who falls madly in love with a young Colombian woman who, because of these things of life, ends up being related to the most powerful and ruthless criminal in the country, an evil man who drags these two young lovers into a series of dangerous situations.
In general, the film has good and bad parts, for example, I enjoyed the development they gave to the young American at the time of being involved in all that criminal world where Pablo Escobar put him to use as an errand boy and take advantage of him and his relationship with his niece, because we constantly see the different crossroads that an innocent young man finds to keep their relationship alive, a relationship that finally breaks and puts him at tremendous risk. However, the bad parts are the most crucial in this film because they subtract a lot of importance and credibility to the plot, what I mean is that on the one hand we have a young man being used as a messenger by a mafia, and on the other hand we have a mobster who inexplicably decides to kill him for no apparent reason and the truth is that I don't like it because it takes away a lot of intensity and realism in a plot that despite being a little slow was being built very well.
The performances are a very good point in this film because they elevate the rhythm of the film through dramatic moments where we see a lot of emotion in events that might normally be boring. Benicio del Toro playing Pablo Escobar is something fascinating because it conveys the evil and despotism that characterized such an evil man who managed to destabilize a country, a man totally sick with power and who did what he wanted with the people without caring about anything more than his benefit.
The film has notable flaws at the plot level, however for those who are familiar with the story of Pablo Escobar everything is easier to understand because we are aware of all the background behind the story, something that those who are new to this type of stories will not appreciate because you notice the lack of development in the facts and above all that something that allows us to establish the background that triggers all this conflict "family" that changes the life of a young man in love. On a technical level, there are not many things that stand out because all the atmosphere and filming is done in simple shots with footage created to transmit a drama that becomes very flimsy. Basically, this is a film that isn't bad, but it doesn't reach its potential due to an evident lack of development in the script.
I enjoyed the film and had a good time watching how a love story was tarnished by the intervention of a man who manipulated the facts to generate chaos in two innocent young people who just wanted to be happy on their own. A film that does not have many surprises but that manages to establish an enjoyable rhythm through a different and very complex plot because of the political background in which it takes place.
