This film brings back memories of our childhood just by reading its name, although, it is a very different plot to the typical fairy tale with candy and innocence. Based on the original story but with a completely different twist, closer to that of the Grimm brothers.
Este filme nos trae recuerdos de nuestra niñez con solo leer su nombre, aunque, es una trama muy diferente al típico cuento de hadas con dulces e inocencia. Basada en la historia original pero con un giro completamente distinto, mas acercado a la de los hermanos Grimm.
The plot begins with the important story of the beautiful girl with a pink cap who at birth was very important to her parents, but one day she became very ill and her father in a desperate attempt to save his little girl went to see a great sorceress who granted him his wish in exchange for being brave in the face of darkness and trusting her, he agreed and trusted her, the girl was healed.
La trama empieza con la importante historia de la hermosa niña con un gorro rosado quien al nacer fue muy importante para sus padres, pero un día enfermó muy gravemente y su padre por un intento desesperado de salvar a su pequeña niña fue a ver a una gran hechicera la cual le concedió su deseo a cambio de ser valiente ante la oscuridad y confiar en ella, el accedió y confió, la niña se sanó.
The sorceress did not miss the opportunity and left the girl according to her "a gift", the gift of clairvoyance, such a girl became famous in the village and everyone wanted to be attended by her, however the girl became the terror since she not only had that gift which she used to predict the death of the villagers but also that she made sure of their next deaths, even that of her own father. Her mother sent the girl to the forest, far away from everyone so that she would not cause any more harm. As the years passed her power increased, luring children to her home to be held captive or meet a fatal end caused by her.
Oz Perkins gives the story a twist and now we see that Gretel (Sophia Lillis) is especially the protagonist, she is not the same Gretel of the traditional tales, this is a teenage girl who to help her mother is looking for a job, but fails in her attempts so the mother abandons her and her little brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey). They both wander for days in the woods in search of the next town to work and eat.
La hechicera no dejó escapar la oportunidad y le dejó a la niña según ella “un obsequio”, el don de la clarividencia, la niña se hizo famosa en el pueblo y todos querían ser atendidos por ella, sin embargo la niña se convirtió en el terror ya que no solo tenía ese don el cual usaba para predecir la muerte de los aldeanos sino también que se aseguraba de sus próximas muertes, hasta la de su propio padre. La madre envió a la niña al bosque, lejos de todos para que no causara más daño. Al trascurrir los años su poder aumentó, atrayendo a niños a su hogar para ser cautivos o tener un final fatal causado por ella.
Oz Perkins le da un giro a la historia y ahora vemos que Gretel (Sophia Lillis) es en especial la protagonista, no es la misma Gretel de los cuentos tradicionales, esta es una chica adolescente quien para ayudar a su madre está en busca de un trabajo, pero falla en sus intentos así que la madre los abandona a ella y a su pequeño hermano menor Hansel (Samuel Leakey). Ambos deambulan días por el bosque en busca del siguiente pueblo para poder trabajar y comer.
After finding a strange cabin in the forest, they go there out of curiosity to see if anyone who lives there can help them, and in their search they come across an old woman named Holda (Alice Krige) who offers them a huge feast with various types of food in abundance, the brothers saw no evil in her and decided to stay after the proposal that the old woman made to them. Later, Gretel with good intentions offers the old woman an opportunity to stay with her while they look for another place and she would help her with the housework, without knowing what she was getting into.
Tras haber conseguido una extraña cabaña en el bosque, se dirigen a ella por la curiosidad de saber si alguien que viva allí los puede ayudar, en su busqueda se topan con una anciana llamada Holda (Alice Krige) quien les ofrece un enorme banquete con diversos tipos de comida en abundancia, los hermanos no vieron maldad en ella y decidieron quedarse después de la propuesta que la anciana les hizo. Más adelante, Gretel con buenas intenciones le ofrece a la anciana una oportunidad de poder quedarse más tiempo con ella mientras buscan otro lugar y ella le ayudaría en los quehaceres del hogar, sin saber en que se metía.
Days pass and banquets abound, but Gretel has very real nightmares in which she encounters the fairy tale girl and other children. Frightened and frustrated, she fights with her brother about leaving the place, but they don't, and a series of mysterious events occur that will make Gretel doubt herself and the kind old woman who welcomed them with open arms and without any visible problem in sight.
This is a very different adaptation from the others we are used to seeing. We see that in the title was first placed the name of Gretel, and although it was with the idea of giving more space to the feminine side and prominence, I do not think it is adequate the way it was captured. And although the photography seems to me quite acceptable, on the other hand, the setting lacked more in terms of frightening aspects, which together with the abuse of voice-over overshadowed the positive points.
Los días pasan y los banquetes abundan, pero Gretel tiene pesadillas muy reales en las que se topa con la niña de los cuentos y otros niños. Asustada y frustrada pelea con su hermano sobre irse de ese lugar pero no lo hacen y ocurren un sin fin de misteriosos eventos que harán dudar a Gretel de ella misma y de la bondadosa anciana que los recibió con brazos abiertos y sin ningún problema visible a su vista.
Esta es una adaptación muy diferente a las otras que estamos acostumbrados a ver. Vemos que en el titulo primero fue colocado el nombre de Gretel, y si bien fue con la idea de darle mas espacio al lado femenino y protagonismo, no me parece adecuado la manera en que fue plasmado. Y aunque la fotografía me parece bastante aceptable, por otra parte a la ambientación le faltó mas en cuanto a aspectos aterradores, lo cual junto con el abuso de voz en off opaca los puntos positivos.
