We all have a dream that we long to fulfill someday in our life, whether it is a small one or a big one, for us to fulfill our most cherished dream would be something wonderful. From an early age we start dreaming about the profession we want to pursue when we grow up, be it astronauts, dancers, musicians, artists, police, doctors, among others; we also dream about what kind of person we could become when we grow up and become a professional adult. Unfortunately not all of us achieve them, but that doesn't mean that we don't achieve something equally significant.
For music teacher Joe Gardner (Jaime Foxx) his life was music, since he was a little boy after his father took him to a jazz club he fell in love with music so much that he wanted to be part of a very famous jazz band and transmit that same passion that other musicians transmitted to him. Although his dream took a different path when he became an elementary school music teacher, he still dreamed of being a renowned jazz musician like his favorite musicians.
Joe is somewhat frustrated by the fact that he didn't have a permanent job like his mother wanted, she didn't agree with her son's dream. When Joe is finally hired by a local school as a permanent teacher the mother is thrilled but for Joe it means ending his dream, as his time would only be for his students. Disillusionment ran through Joe's mind, the fear of losing something he wanted so badly made him think.
A call from his former student Curly inviting him to be part of the band of the famous and well known saxophonist Dorothea Williams (Angela Bassett), makes Joe feel again that spark of his dream and wants to try to be part of them to achieve his goal, however, an accident happens just a few hours before his presentation, Joe falls down a sewer and dies.
His soul goes to a strange place called "The Great After" and upon realizing this he decides to run as far as possible and accidentally enters another totally different space called "The Great Before" where he meets a somewhat strange character named Jerry (Alice Braga), who is the combination of all the quantum fields of the universe in the form of a female figure, Jerry mistakes him for a mentor of new souls and orients him regarding the work he must do which consists of helping the new souls to find their spark and complete their personality card in order to enter the portal to planet earth and become a living person.
Joe takes the risk to jump and return to his life but is not allowed without a completed personality card, the problem is that he cannot be given such a card as his destination was another and if he is discovered he is sent back to the big one afterwards.
Another Jerry realizes that a soul is missing from the big after and sets out on his search everywhere, but Joe sneaks in and poses as a tutor where he meets 22 (Tina Fey) a little soul who hasn't been able to leave that place for years as she hasn't found her spark. Joe is now tasked with helping 22 find her spark and a way back into her life. Together they go through many adventures, problems and confusions that make them change their realities.
I liked this beautiful Disney film a lot, not only because of the great job they did with the animation but also because of the teachings about not living in fear and start living to the fullest. As well as living in the present, sharing your passions, experiences and connect with people.
On the other hand in many occasions we focus so much on a dream or we think we are the center of everything, which makes us not even enjoy everything that comes with the process or the path while we reach our goal, it also makes us lose focus on the good people who are with us and the details of life that are there in our environment to show us the wonders of life.

Todos tenemos un sueño que anhelamos cumplir algún día de nuestra vida, así sea uno pequeño o uno grande, para nosotros cumplir nuestro más apreciado sueño sería algo maravilloso. Desde pequeños empezamos a soñar con la profesión de la cual queremos ejercer al crecer, ya sea astronautas, bailarinas, músicos, artistas, policías, medico, entre otros; también soñamos con que clase de persona nos podríamos convertir al crecer y ser ya un adulto profesional. Lamentablemente no todos logramos cumplirlos, pero eso no quiere decir que no logremos algo igualmente significativo.
Para el profesor de música Joe Gardner (Jaime Foxx) su vida era la música, desde pequeño después de que su padre lo llevara a un club de jazz él se enamoró tanto de la música que deseó ser parte de una banda muy famosa de jazz y transmitir esa misma pasión que otros músicos le transmitieron a él. Aunque su sueño tomó un rumbo un tanto distinto al llegar a ser profesor de música de una escuela primaria, pero aún seguía soñando con ser un reconocido músico del jazz como lo son sus músicos favoritos.
Joe se ve algo frustrado por el hecho de que no tenía un empleo fijo como su madre quería, ella no estaba de acuerdo con el sueño de su hijo. Cuando a Joe por fin lo contrata una escuela local como maestro permanente la madre se emociona pero eso para Joe significa terminar con su sueño, ya que su tiempo solo sería para sus alumnos. La desilusión pasó por la mente de Joe, el miedo a perder algo que tanto deseaba lo hizo pensar.
Una llamada de su ex alumno Curly invitándolo a formar parte por un día de la banda de la famosa y muy reconocida saxofonista Dorothea Williams (Angela Bassett), hace que Joe vuelva a sentir esa chispa de su sueño y quiera intentar formar parte de ellos para lograr su meta, sin embargo, ocurre un accidente tan solo unas horas antes de su presentación, Joe cae por un alcantarillado y muere.
Su alma se va a un lugar extraño llamado “El gran después” y al darse cuenta de ello decide correr lo más lejos posible entrando por accidente a otro espacio totalmente diferente llamado “El gran antes” donde conoce a un personaje algo extraño llamado Jerry (Alice Braga), quien es la combinación de todos los campos cuánticos del universo en forma de una figura de mujer, Jerry lo confunde con un mentor de nuevas almas y lo orienta con respecto al trabajo que debe de hacer el cual consiste en ayudar a las nuevas almas a encontrar su chispa y completar su tarjeta de personalidad para así poder entrar al portal del planeta tierra y ser una persona viva.
Joe se arriesga a saltar y volver a su vida pero no le es permitido sin una tarjeta de personalidad completada, el problema es que a él no se le puede entregar dicha tarjeta ya que su destino era otro y si es descubierto lo envían de nuevo al gran después.
Otro Jerry se da cuenta de que falta un alma por llegar al gran después y se pone en su búsqueda por todos lados, pero Joe se escabulle y se hace pasar por un tutor donde conoce a 22 (Tina Fey) una pequeña alma que no ha podido salir de ese lugar por años ya que no ha encontrado su chispa. Joe tiene ahora la tarea de ayudar a 22 a encontrar su chispa y la manera de volver a su vida. Juntos pasan por muchas aventuras, problemas y confusiones que les hacen cambiar sus realidades.
Este precioso filme de Disney me ha gustado un montón, no solo por el gran trabajo que hicieron con la animación sino también por las enseñanzas sobre no vivir con miedo y comenzar a vivir al máximo. Así como vivir el presente, compartir tus pasiones, experiencias y conectar con las personas.
Por otra parte en muchas ocasiones nos enfocamos tanto en un sueño o nos creemos el centro de todo, lo cual nos hace incluso no disfrutar de todo lo que conlleva el proceso o el camino mientras llegamos a nuestra meta, también nos hace perder la atención en las buenas personas que están con nosotros y en los detalles de la vida que están allí en nuestro entorno para mostrarnos las maravillas de la vida.
