This time, I have decided to start with the much criticized and at the same time praised for its soundtrack: "Requiem for a Dream". I hope you like the analysis, I leave you with it.
"Requiem for a Dream" is a film directed by film director Darren Aronofsky, which was released in 2000. This film shows us in a raw and frightening way what drug addiction is and the devastating effects it brings to the lives of the main characters. Here is a psychological analysis as detailed as possible:
ADICCIÓN // ADDICTION
The story takes a deep look at addiction and how it affects the four main characters. Each of them faces different forms of addiction; Harry, Marion and Tyrone, are three young people addicted to heroin and cocaine by their own will who want to have their own merchandise to sell and consume, and Sara on the other hand, becomes addicted to amphetamines since she was prescribed to lose weight quickly, because what she wants is to be thin to participate in a TV show. The film shows how the abuse of these substances consumes their lives, drives them to do unimaginable things and destroys their relationships.
RECOMPENSA Y CASTIGO // REWARD AND PUNISHMENT
The film also shows us the cycle of reward and punishment that the characters go through, as they feel good when they use, but then experience a terrible emotional and physical fall. This unstable state between feeling good and feeling bad reinforces the addictive behavior and traps the characters in an endless destructive cycle.
AISLAMIENTO // INSULATION
The characters tend to isolate themselves from their friends and family due to their addictions. As they fall deeper into addiction, they distance themselves from the people who were once important to them, which increases their sense of loneliness and despair.
ALUCINACIONES // HALLUCINATIONS
The film shows us when the characters present delusions and strong hallucinations due to the excessive consumption of substances, because on one occasion we can see Sara in the middle of a crisis and we observe how her reality is distorted to the point of creating a significant mental deterioration, since unfortunately she ends up in a psychiatric center.
NIHILISMO Y DESESPERACIÓN // NIHILISM AND DESPAIR
The story also explores themes of hopelessness and nihilism, as we see the characters reach a point where they believe there is no hope of rehabilitation or regaining their lives. At this point in the film one as a viewer also comes to think the same, as the ending of the 4 characters is devastating.
In summary, "Requiem for a Dream" is an excellent, but very devastating film, which offers a somewhat crude, but very realistic representation of drug addiction and the terrible consequences it brings to the mental and physical health of those affected.
