40 Days and 40 Nights Review: Funny Premise, Ugly Ending

Review by @goldenproject 🏆#80 🔥24 🎵68 🎬26 📺17 · 1h · of 40 Days and 40 Nights · 2 views

While I was searching for a romantic comedy movie I could watch, I came across this movie, and just with the title, I was curious to actually watch it because I expected something more serious and silly, maybe. But beneath all the sexual jokes and all, the movie actually has something more serious... it was released in 2002. The movie director is Michael Lehmann. And the movie started with a young man named Matt, who decided to stay away from anything sexual for forty days after a breakup, which also happened to be lent period.

He can't simply get over his ex; that was why he decided to give up sex for Lent. That was majorly the whole pitch. And for the rest of the showtime, it's a better pitch than it has any right to be.

Josh Hartnett acted as Matt. He was this web designer based in San Francisco who'd had a breakup with Nicole. The breakup broke him so that he was unable to perform with anyone else to the extent that he faked an orgasm during one of the dates he went for. He told John, his brother, everything he has been facing because he is training to be a Catholic priest. And after hearing the news that her ex had been engaged to another man, he finally decided to go for total abstinence for 40 days, no masturbation, and no sex, and he was hoping that would fix something in him.

He has a co-worker and a roommate who found out about Matt's new experience, and he turned it immediately into an office bet pool using his own website.

Then along the way, he met Erica at a laundromat. What age is specialized on is deleting pornography from the internet. That is where she makes her source of living, so watching the movie, they both failed to have sex for personal reasons and professional reasons too. The scene I'll call their best scene together was inside a bus during a ride home, and Math couldn't compose himself to kiss her good night but did a high five instead. I just feel that works mainly for him because Sossamon played it straight instead of cute.

Naturally, looking at Matt, he's a likable guy who added more light to his role. And with all the funny scenes, this movie has nothing to do with sex or family dinner where Matt's dad, who just came out of his hip surgery, proudly shows off which positions are still possible with the cast on. While a very close friend of Paul's roommate was rushing in with an ultra-violet lamp to check the sheets to see if he was going to see any evidence.

On the day 35 of his abstinence, the pool his coworker set has already gotten to eighteen thousand dollars and another coworkers was trying to sweet-talk Matt to give in. As he heads to the office bathroom to do it alone, he finds his own boss in the restroom, having accidentally downed the Viagra drink that was spiked for Matt. And he immediately went to find Erica after he climbed down the window. They both got together and spend that night with having sex. And I'll say that was the most romantic scene in this movie.

The the final date came, and the movie took another dimension that I did not see coming. Just to get past the last day, Matt had to handcuffs himself to the his bed. He fell asleep, and while he woke up, he discovered that Nicola had already had sex with him while he was fast asleep. I saw that as a plot twist. Because I saw Nicole roles as offensive one because there are better ways to have resolved things. And I can't say Matt broke his vow on purpose because he wasn't in on it and that was why he even handcuffed himself.

I'll say Erica also deserved the ending she got because Matt won her back. You can skip the last ten minutes, that is if you want, or at least you know they are coming. But watch the movie for Matt. He did a good job. And If you enjoy it, you can come back here to share you take in the movie.

It's definitely a movie I wouldn't watch—the plot seems so absurd to me, haha—but hey, there's something for everyone.

I'll consider this movie as one of the few romantic movies these I didn't expect the plot twist these happened at the end.
