Pitch Perfect (2012) Movie Review

Looking and sounding awfully similar to Glee, Pitch Perfect casts Anna Kendrick as Beca, who is starting college and dreaming about producing music and get drawn into an all-girl a capella group, The Bellas. They are trying to recover from the scandal that surrounded them four months earlier in a significant competition.

Pitch Perfect isn't... bad. It's surprisingly entertaining and sweet, with a couple of genuinely funny bits and a lot of good music. Rebel Wilson definitely takes the cake as Fat Amy and provides most of the laughs while Kendrick is sweet and shows that she can hold her own as the lead. She has a charming presence and edge to her, and she doesn't succumb to the mannerisms of your usual leading ladies in these types of films. Please keep your eyes on her, and she is fast becoming one of the most charming and likeable actresses.

To some people, it will always be too similar to Glee, but at first, the film seems to be very aware of the similarities and even makes fun of this, but forgets it by the time the Bellas reach the regionals and sinks into your typical high school comedy, but with college. This is not to say that the film becomes flawed or not entertaining; the last sing-off at the finals is surprisingly exciting and will have most people jamming along.

Unfortunately, Pitch Perfect isn't that memorable. It is good entertainment, but you won't be referring to it the next week, because even though being a solid comedy film, it fails to have that extra something that would set it apart from every other movie you watched. I watched the movie for about two hours, and even though I liked it, I seem to have nothing to say about it, which is sad. But I do recommend it, and it's worth a see.
