The Lake House (2006) Movie Review

The movie was set in 2006, and through some mysterious time-space lapse, Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) and Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) continuously mail each other and fall in love, even as they are still two years apart.

The story is originally from a Korean movie (‘Il Mare’) and shows how intermingled the movie industry is nowadays. With borrowings from new and creative ideas from less traditional sources of films, Hollywood can harness any idea, put it through its colossus marketing factory and seal and pack it for mass consumption.

The story requires some serious mental gymnastics, though, as Reeves and Bullock do not appear on the same scene until much later. This helps as we see two oh-so-familiar actors pretty much showcasing their talent unshadowed by the other. I loved Keanu Reeves in this movie; it’s a good break from his general action movies mold, and if he decides to make more movies like this, he might even turn into an American version of Hugh Grant.

Sandra Bullock also carries her role as a lonely, busy, aspiring, desperate doctor well. A tad of Miss Congeniality, coupled with the calm of her role in ‘Speed’ is what a keen eye should be able to spot.

It is a good movie, set in Chicago, and one of the few movies I’ve managed to watch in one continuous sitting; what with the amount of thinking and predicting you have to do. It’s an interesting watch played by two actors of good talent.
