Stephenie Meyer's 2005 book of the same name precedes this movie of lovers torn apart not by time or space but by the sheer differences in their biological makeup. One's a human, the other a vampire of some sort.
Teenagers seem to be very pre-occupied with vampires. Never read the book myself; I already found the plot a tad too predictable. The actors seemed to be in character most of the time though, dressed in appropriate flannels and cowboy hats peppered with the obligatory American Indian going to school.
We find our star, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) relocating and fitting into school, and typical of American high schools we have led to believe through Hollywood, finding her niche. If you've watched 'Into The Wild' you will remember the cynical daughter of the crazy cowboy grandfather or someone or rather; its as if Bella Swan was based on her. Stewart delivers a right mix of melancholy, tomboy-ness and sexiness all at once; just as she did in 'Into The Wild'.
Edward Cullen on the other hand (Cedric Diggory to Harry Potter fans) doesn't need to do much acting. Anyway, the high-key effect produced by post-production in the movie gives a magical and fantasy-like feel whenever the vampires are around; so its pretty easy for the experienced movie-goer to predict what's coming next.
The story deepens but only slightly and by the time they kissed, get saved and attend the prom, everyone's decently pleased with the acting and cinematography but is leaving their oohs and ahhs for another movie.
To me, it is just another teen movie with a vampirical twist, some special effects and beautiful actors and actresses in it.
