3 Days to Kill (film): I liked it, but I also have a soft spot for Kostner

Review by @gooddream · 2667d · of 3 Days to Kill

This is a pretty well-trodden road as far as plots are concerned: Father who has neglected his family in the line of duty attempt to return to rekindle their relationship and also must balance his rather dangerous employment at the same time. He is a bad-ass, but can not reveal to his family members that this is the case. This has been done in many films but normally with more comedic actors than Kostner.

Ethan Renner (Kostner) is a very experienced CIA agent who, just like anyone else in these positions (in films) is a one-man army that is so good at what he does that he can crack jokes along the way. Early on it is shown that his speed is slowing a bit and he seems to be inhibited by a persistent hacking cough too. It later turns out that this is a terminal illness and NO, this isn't a spoiler because it is shown in the trailer.

Action films are unrealistic anyway, but the amount of things that happen in this movie an NO police even respond to it, is a bit nuts.

A lot of the movie follows Ethan's attempt to rekindle the long-lost relationship with his daughter and this has obvious problems associated with it which are evidenced with the fact that Zooey (his daughter, played by Hailee Steinfeld) refuses to call him Dad and instead refers to him as Ethan.

I got excited when I saw that Luc Besson was involved in writing the screenplay, but then kind of let down when I saw it was directed by McG, who just seems to take on any ol' damn project that comes his way. Costner doesn't let us down in this role though and while I am certain I am not alone in this feeling, I think he can make even bad films a bit better.

it certainly isn't anything mind-blowing or in really any way original, but I stayed entertained for 90 minutes and well, that is what we watch films for, right?

I'm not gonna give this an overall rating but just come flat out and say that yes, it is entertaining and yes, you already know the ending right from the start. It is True Lies with less comedy but that doesn't make it bad.

I pretty much like anything that Costner is in. My wife and I have been really digging Yellowstone lately on the Paramount Network. I think season two is coming out in just a couple of days. My wife is over the moon about that...

I enjoyed this one thoroughly and maybe it's because I think he executed that role the best way he could. The story is old but he sort of gave it his own vibe and thats where the difference comes in.

Actually the same old story. Dad gets ill and suddenly wants to make up. Might watching it. Thanks for the review. ☘💕
