This was another random encounter as I had never heard of it. Perhaps they marketed it back in North America.
The film is one that is actually quite familiar. Someone gets in trouble while sailing and terrible things happen. Then they are stranded at sea unable to contact anyone for help. This has been done many times before. I suppose the only real difference is that in this particular story it just happens to be something that actually happened.
So there isn't really much to say. It is a story that has been done many times. A test of human endurance where a young girl ends up on a sailing vessel and well, storms happen out there. I don't want to spoil the story but i will say the cinematography is as fantastic as the story is familiar.
The real star of this film is Shailene Woodley. I know very little about her but her acting in this movie is second-to-none. She is absolutely remarkable in it. I have said in the past that I feel as though one of the most difficult things that an actor can face is the need to act alone and she must do quite a lot in this movie as it is a real story of someone being "adrift" for 41 days. The range of emotions that she is able to portray, many times without any dialogue is a testament to her excellence as an actress. I was moved by her performance and I believe that you will be too. I cried at one point, i am not afraid to say this.
I don't really know much about her, but I am now a fan. I will be looking into her filmography immediately and hope to see more films on the horizon for her.
I can't give the movie high marks, but if i was evaluating a single actor, Shailene Woodley would receive 10/ 10. She is perfection in this and I hope she can move on to bigger and better things because of this. I look forward to her future work. Previous to this I had only known her from the Divergent Trilogy, which made me want to vomit because of its horribleness.
