This is in reference to the series that aired starting in 2004, not the original from 1978. As someone who is not a fan of reboots for the most part I have to say that this is a massive contradiction to my normal opinion of "they should have left it in the past." This show, in my mind, was absolutely brilliant and wonderfully executed for all of the 4 season that it aired.
The pilot episode thrusts you right into the action without really any backstory, which i thought was fantastic. It shows the last remaining humans (around 50,000 or so) constantly fleeing the ever-pursuing Cylons, who for reasons that are not explained (which is fine by me, I don't need to know everything) discover the fleet's location. I don't remember how long the timer was for but it was always exactly the same amount of time.
They are lead by Commander William "Bill" Adama (played by Edward James Olmos) in their desperate search for a 13th colony that many of the group don't even believe exists. This colony is referred to as "Earth."
Despite the fact that a bunch of robots who don't seem to have any sort of human or alien leadership pursuing a much smaller group of human-controlled ships seems like it would run out of steam pretty quickly as far as entertainment value is concerned, the show stays interesting all the way through with various sub-plots that develop as the series proceeds.
Despite the fact that the clunky Cylons from 1978 were really cool to a very young me, the updated robots are certainly significantly more intimidating and I thought the preservation of the "floating eyes" was fantastically incorporated into modern times.

This is not a spoiler as it is revealed very early on in the series. Basically, anyone and everyone can be a Cylon, and no one can be trusted.
I don't want to spoil which characters are Cylons, but let's just say, some of them are smoking hot. :P
This trailer is a bit long but it is the only one I can find that is worth a crap. Basically, if you are a nerd like me there is a really excellent chance that you have already seen all of these and more likely than not, already agree with me about its epic-ness. If someone is not into Sci-Fi i think that this series has enough non sci-fi elements to entertain pretty much everyone.
The series also ended exactly when it needed to; it was evident they were running out of material and rather than drag the show into oblivion (the way I feel like they did with Lost) they ended it after only 4 seasons. The characters are great, the acting is good, and the series doesn't rely overly on CGI for entertainment value. This is one of my favorite series that i have seen in the past 20 years an definitely worth a look by anyone, particularly those who like space crap.
