It wouldn't be fair to take a look at Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and not also look at the movie that they kinda stole the entire story from.
Well i suppose unlike the Netflix series this one doesn't involved a cult. In the 60's there actually were people who had fallout shelters underground in preparation for nuclear war (some people probably still do) but that is the story here.
The Webber family believes that the tensions between the USSR and USA are going to escalate and the mutually assured destruction is just around the corner. One day Dr. Calvin Webber (Christopher Walken) panics and rushes himself and his pregnant wife into the bunker and it just so happens that shortly thereafter a jet crashes into his house. Believing a nuclear bomb has in fact struck he activates the bunker's seal, which can not be opened for 35 years. No one knows that he has the bunker as he kept it a secret. Therefore when they are clearing the wreckage it is presumed that the entire family was killed.
A baby is born in the shelter. He is named Adam and his upbringing goes by in a flash because that isn't really the main story in this movie. Adam Webber (Brenden Frasier) needs to go out to resupply one day when he is in his 30's to help his ailing father, he arrives on the surface with lots of protective gear to protect him from fallout radiation only to discover there isn't any.
He knows nothing about the modern world and his politeness and old-fashioned attitudes are found extremely appealing by the people that he interacts with. He doesn't really know HOW to be rude and of course doesn't even understand sarcasm since his parents didn't teach it to him. This can't really be portrayed correctly in pictures but check out the trailer.
Of course I failed to mention that the movie is primarily a romantic comedy and that is just fine. Blast from the past did very poorly and received mixed reviews, which you know, is kind of what everything that Brenden Frasier ends up getting. One of the cool things about this movie is that the underground bunker wasn't built for this movie, it is a real place that is still around today (last I saw it was for sale also.)
I liked it a lot more than the professional critics did. I give it a
