Doctor Sleep (film): Color me unimpressed

Review by @gooddream · 2342d · of Doctor Sleep

This film is one of the few films that doesn't have talking robots or the Rock in it that actually made it over to Thailand. I missed it in the theaters on its first run but for some reason, it came back a week ago and was still in the cinema yesterday. Me and my friend were the only people in the theater :)

This movie is a belated sequel to The Shining which of course is one of the most famous films of all time. I was unaware of the fact that Stephen King had written this sequel back in 2013 because books, much like films, don't really make their way to where I live in Asia.

I was enthusiastic to see this film but was kind of let down as I didn't really find it at all scary and I feel as though the story (whether or not it is true to the book or not I am not aware) relies on the characters of the first story for shock and awe entirely too much.

Ewan McGregor plays the role of a grown up Danny Torrence who was the "Red-rum" kid in the original.

We are made aware of this through a series of really nicely done flashbacks where they found an actress who looks almost exactly like Shelley Duvall. Grown up Danny is a troubled alcoholic adult who still has "the Shine" but is unable to control it.

He ends up meeting other people with his ability rather rapidly and a story unfolds where he has to stop the evil people who also have this ability. If this seems like a spoiler take it easy, it is in the trailer and is spelled out in the first 10 minutes of the film.

I feel as though director Mike Flanagan had a tough job to do here as he not only directed the film, but also wrote the screenplay and edited the final cut. He wanted to incorporate some aspects of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 masterpiece, but not directly copy it. This couldn't have been an easy task at all.

In the end, I feel as though a lot of the magic that existed in The Shining is lost in this, as the baddies are inexplicably evil and it isn't really clear as to what it is that is driving their nefarious ways or how it is that they have come to control their abilities. You may recall that Danny's powers in The Shining was actually a minor issue in the film, as most of it focused on the eventual madness of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson.)

While I realize that they couldn't simply directly copy the story of The Shining, the way we are focusing on the powers of this rather large group of individuals almost made it feel like another superhero movie...and we already have enough of those.

To be fair, I don't know what I was really expecting from this film. I guess you could say that since I am such a fan of the original I may have set the bar a bit high and that was the reason that I was let down.

If you have not seen The Shining I believe you will appreciate this film a great deal more than if you have seen it. I guess the film is OK, but I just didn't find it original or very entertaining and I spent a great deal of the movie feeling bored. I nearly started to play with my phone in the cinema and that is a good sign for me that the director missed the mark.

It was nice to revisit the now derelict Overlook Hotel and some of the scenes were a trip down memory lane for fans of the Nicholson film. Critics gave the film high marks, as you would expect, but audiences around the world were rather uninterested as the film eventually ended up losing $20 million and this resulted in the indefinite shelving of the planned 3rd film.

My overall rating! 5 / 10

Howdy sir gooddream! Another great review that I really appreciate because I haven't seen this one and now I know what to expect. In other words if I think it will be pretty boring and bad then it will be better than expected!

This second part can be more intense and more stylish than the first, but none of them can compare to the book (which has infinitely superior quality).

The Shining is one of my very favorite films ( shared place with Alien ) and I can't help but feel that I'm gonna feel something similar like you when watching this film. I probably won't watch it on the big screen either.

Anyhow, I didn't know there was a sequel ( other book ) to the story either, because I stopped reading Stephen King half a life time ago.

Will probably still give this a watch some time, so thank you for lowering my expectations.

    Cheers,

    Vincent

are you such a big fan of cinema? or watching movies is just your hobby? so many reviews, so good ones, maybe is it your profession already?:)

At this point I was like, "Really?". They always seem to write the time aged characters of great films, as being washed up or full of addictions due to their great abilities. I suppose that all kids with awesome powers eventually become riddled with question and turmoil which slowly drives them to drink.

It's hard to follow through with a great film based on a masterpiece. Very very hard. Like you said.. there are enough super hero movies.. a mediocre one will tend to get left behind or rather tossed aside.

If you get a sec.. and are even interested.. check out my Indoor Skydiving .. it was pretty cool. You should try it, if they have something like it near your new local ;-) - Also.. I am working on a new drawing of Nadi.. better than that blind contour for sure.. Hope you don't mind???. Took a picture off your last post about a haircut :-D

I know a lot of people that were really excited about this film but like you they ended up being very disappointed. I have never seen the original and I have never read the book either. From all of the clips I have seen, I am not sure what is so scary about it. I think if I was going to do anything, I would probably read the book. Sometimes the things we picture in our head are much scarier than what we see with our eyes. Thanks for doing this write up. Sorry it didn't hit the mark for you!

Obviously you would have hoped it was as good as the original. I must admit I had no idea this was even around. Ewen is not exactly Mr Scary and would never cast him in a horror.

Damn, I'm surprised this made you so flaccid. Though, I agree this movie wasn't very scary. I did think it had some fairly creepy imagery and moments though. This was one of my top 10 movies of 2019 easily. I though this shit bopped hard. And, I consider The Shining to be one of my top 3 horror films of all time. Can't say I could see how they were even thinking of doing a 3rd film considering there is no third book, so yeah.
