Eddie the Eagle (film) : good film but not entirely truthful

Review by @gooddream · 2806d · of Eddie the Eagle

I was recommended this film by a friend quite some time ago. I don't know why it took me so long to get around to it but I suspect it was because the person who recommended it to me kind of annoys me so i subconsciously decided to do the opposite of whatever they suggest.

The film is about an eccentric youth name Eddie Edwards (who was actually named Michael) and is played by Taron Egerton, a person I have never heard of. He has dreams of being in the Olympics but unfortunately just isn't good enough at any of the things that he attempts to be a part of in order to go to the Olympics.

He decides one day after failing in yet another Olympic endeavor that he is going to represent Britain in the Olympics for ski-jumping as the England has not even bothered to participate in the sport for 60 years. Of course, first he need to learn how to do it. He is already a rather accomplished downhills skiier so he thinks it will be pretty easy. Well, it should come as no surprise that it is not and his first attempts end pretty badly until he catches the attention of local drunk and slope maintenance guy who also happens to be an ex ski-jumping champion, Bronson Peary (who is played by Hugh Jackman.)

Bronson has some rather unorthodox methods of training Eddie but it is extremely beneficial to him because for the most part no one has been trying to help him and the other "real" ski-jumpers take many opportunities to belittle him.

This is were the film becomes entirely fiction and was probably made that way just so Hugh Jackman could be in the cast. There is no Bronson Peary, there never was. The entire side show about him is completely made up, as is the involvement of Peary's mentor whose name i can't recall but is played by Christopher Walken.

This movie is a winner that is for sure, and it also showcases the gifts of a boy / man who refused to give up and didn't listen to what anyone had to say and he actually captured the hearts of the world despite the fact that he wasn't terribly good.

I found it inspirational but was kind of curious as to why they didn't follow up about what happened to Eddie and Peary after the movie was finished as they tend to in sports biopics. But this was just because an awful lot of the film is completely made up. However, the underlying message is still the same and I highly recommend you watch this film.

I love this movie. Despite the fact that a significant part was made up, it's very inspirational and has something that clicks deeply with me. It motivates me to be better and fight for my dreams.

This movie reminds me of Cool Runnings. I did not know what part of the story was false, nor did I bother to investigate the respect. However, I think the movie is entertaining.

Haven't watched it and i know the true story so it wasn't something that interests me. Watch Someone Marry Barry. Saw it a while back.
