Recognized as one of the ten best independent films of 2015, this movie speaks to the minds of anyone that is a fan of science-fiction or just has an interest in the advancement of technology and the potential dangers that they introduce to our world.

I definitely do NOT want to spoil any of this film for you guys out there because I think that if there was ever a forum of individuals who likely have an interest in technology-related films, particularly ones that are partially based in truth, it would be right here at Steemit where I am likely to find those people. So basically i will just say this: See this film if you have not done so already.

The plot is simple and this is spoiler-free and is in the first 10 minutes of the movie. A programmer named Caleb is invited to the home of the CEO for the company that he works for in order to do some Turing test confirmation work on an artificial life-form that the CEO (named Nathan) has spent a great deal of time creating. That's the story. I'm not going to say more because there are many opportunities for me to spoil the movie and I don't want to do that.

This movie is magnificent because not only does it mess with the characters in the movie, it messes with you, the viewer and there are still tons of fan theories out there about what actually happened as it is not spelled out in the film directly. However, at the same time it isn't terribly cryptic and it is kind of left up to you the viewer about what you want the ending to mean.

This movie is very non-Hollywood in its delivery and also how the plot progresses. It has some reveals that are not so surprising and then some others that are quite shocking. There aren't really a whole lot of plot holes other than some glaring ones such as the CEO of a major company deciding to live in the middle of nowhere and how it is that he gets supplies etc. I suppose we will have to just believe that it is possible to keep a place that isolated stocked with food and booze and what not.

I might be overrating this movie because I really like the genre but I don't give a crap. This movie is excellent. I also now really want to travel to Norway because the scenery in this film is out of the this world.

I have watched this movies shortly after it was released and I really loved it ! This post made me want to watch it again ! It is a really disturbing film, but disturbing in a good sens : it makes you question stuffs such as humanity, your mind, yourself, your freedom of choice. It is a simple movie with a simple plot but it focuses on the subject (AI) very deeply, giving a lot of food for thought. In a way it is similar to a black mirror episode.

I totally agree with you : See this film if you have not done so already.

This film was awesome! The way she manipulated poor Caleb by turning his compassion against him really messed with my head big time. This movie really makes you look at what it means to be a person.

I'd really like to see more films like this one!

Great movie. I think if there’s ever a true AI it might do something similar. Wait. Observe. Take control. Or maybe even just control without anyone ever realizing it.

One of the my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. Great script, casting & direction. It deals with the challenges of the coming interactions between humans and androids. Don't wish to spoil it for those who haven't watched it yet.

The Alex Garland film "Ex Machina" might look like just one of the annoying variations on "transhumanism", singularity, the ultimate accession of artificial intelligence - and to some extent it quite follows this theme. There are, however, several points that demonstrate the shift in the plot of competition between human and artificial intelligence. I agree with the comment roki112 that the English picture reminds of the stylistics of the famous British science fiction series "Black Mirror". In the Turing test, the verification frame itself could not be questioned: the machine must speak as a routine, since it cannot want to refuse such a dialogue. In "Ex Machina" the intellect starts from the place when it turns out that she not only refuses to talk with the person, but also uses this conversation herself purely instrumentally, manipulatively, in order to literally open the door. Perhaps, speech is the main human vulnerability, and not some generic difference (in the course of the film in the film indicate that a person is not too different from a machine that has received the entire language at once, without training, because for him the language in some sense also congenital). Of course, a person is capable of instrumentalizing his own speech - at first the tester speaks with Ava not for the sake of "communication", but to check how much she is capable of speaking at all. This instrumentalization is easily disavowed by the machine, which Caleb manages to shame: how could she "think" that he talks to her heart-to-heart, and he actually only checks it! In other words, speech remains an ineradicable vulnerability because it is impossible to carry out full instrumentalization, not accompanied by signs of sincerity, interest in the interlocutor, the pursuit of truth, etc. The robot Ava skillfully manipulates the fact that a person cannot "just manipulate" or be in his speech completely free from those effects of truth and sincerity that he produces - as it seems to him, quite distanced, "technically", "purely on business" and etc. All these effects are collected in one package, which is sent to the person as a target, punching a gap in it.

To those who have seen the movie and the "Black Mirror" episode "Be Right Back," does anyone else think it's kind of funny that Domhnall Gleeson plays Caleb in "Ex Machina" and Ash in "Black Mirror." Because Caleb is a human talking to an android and Ash is an android talking to a human. His role is essentially reversed in the film.

I thought it was funny.

The trailer and the presentation you do are very interesting, @gooddream. Not only that, I also see that it stars Alicia Vikander who is an excellent actress of the new era. And indeed, the locations look impressive. I'll take your advice!!

One of the best Sci-Fi movies i ever saw, and in my opinion Nathan was the good guy, he was a genius and it was a pity the world lost one in that way. Caleb was an intelligent man, but without too much sexual experience, and he was easily manipulated by Ava. Ava is just a robot without any kind of remorse, clearly not sentient. I felt bad when Nathan died and the way she just made a fool of Caleb, i hoped she could be more than a robot without any kind of feelings, something different.
