Headhunters (film): Incredible Norwegian film

Review by @gooddream · 2828d · of Headhunters

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has a name that is difficult to remember, but he has a face that no one can forget after starring in the show nearly everyone loves as Jaime Lannister. In Headhunters (Hodejegerne) he is not the main character, but he may as well be.

The following might seem like spoilers but it is actually revealed very early on in the film. If you want to simply take my word for the excellence of this action-thriller film and go in blind, stop reading now.

The main character is Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) who is one of Norway's top headhunters and enjoys a very elaborate lifestyle. Despite his high level of income, he always seems to need more so he actually moonlights as an art thief. He is never caught because he replaces the originals with perfect replicas and his victims are never even aware they have been robbed. No one knows about his alter ego, including his stunning wife, who Roger is constantly concerned he is not good enough for and must continually shower her with gifts.

One day his wife introduces him to Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.) Clas is looking for a career shift and is interested in securing the services of Roger in order to do so. In the meantime, it is discovered that Clas has a painting estimated to be worth $100 million. Upon stealing the painting, Roger discovers that Clas has a special forces background and specializes in tracking people. He discovers after the fact that this was the wrong person to steal from.

And I am going to leave it at that. You'll have to find out the rest on your own - but trust me, it is worth it.

I have never seen anything Norwegian before this movie and I haven't seen anything ever since. This was definitely a great action movie and upon finishing it and realizing that they made the entire film for under $4 million, it makes me wonder what USA movies are spending all the cash on. I can find no flaw in this movie except for one part where a car flies off a cliff in a manor that defies the physics of the situation.

As always with non-English films, I highly suggest that you DO NOT view an overdubbed version of the film because all the emotion in the actors' voices are lost. Just accept the fact that you either need to be fluent in Norwegian or read the subtitles. It is worth it

While not billed as a horror film, I found Nightcrawler to be terrifying in both concept and execution.

It's a well known fact that the media is corrupt, and that the bloodthirsty populace follows their grisly scenes and warnings like lambs to the slaughter. It's another thing entirely to see the dark underbelly, the very people that provide the media with those bloody images and horrifying tag-lines.

Jake Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Louis Bloom is astounding. Creepy and unsettling and downright loathsome - yet absolutely captivating to watch. Bloom is an excellent example of the type of sociopath that would be drawn to nightcrawling, to making money off the suffering and misery of others.

The script, performances, soundtrack and cinematography come together to form an incredibly tense and quietly ominous film. I held my breath throughout the entire scene where Louis calmly explains to Rick (Riz Ahmed) that he will hurt him badly if he doesn't cooperate. The almost uplifting music during the scene where Louis drags a man's corpse for a better shot is downright disturbing.

Nightcrawler also does an excellent job of creating and capturing the atmosphere of Los Angeles at night. The film pulls you in and makes you a part of that world. The incredible cinematography does a lot in this regard, with beautiful shots of the city at night and fast-paced driving sequences.

Nightcrawler is a fantastic film, but it certainly isn't for everyone. Some may be put off by the honest and brutal portrayal of the ambulance-chasing media coupled with the cold, manipulative, and completely unlikable character of Louis Bloom.

Outstanding thriller film with practically non-stop action with so many tricks and twists you can easily lose count of in the process. Quality is felt in everything in this European production. I don't want to use the word perfect in vain but it is pretty much close to it a perfect action movie. It has it all: the action-packed story with a lot of twists, double-crossing beautiful women aka femme fatales, ultra-dark humor, a dangerous villain with military background, suspicious cops and the gem of this movie, brilliantly played by Aksel Hennie, a little man leading double life with a huge package inferiority complex. No wonder Hollywood is making a remake of this entertaining Norwegian picture.

    Thank You
