Hellboy 2019 (film): A mess that bored me

Review by @gooddream · 2629d · of Hellboy

I really didn't expect a great deal from this film because I found the other Hellboy films to be very "meh" as well. However, now that I live in a Thai metropolis, movies in amazing theaters start at $3 a person and when I saw that this would be in an IMAX theater for a mere $4, I figured "what the hell."

I can't really tell what is going on in the story and there is a lot of narration going on early in the film to get people up to speed because it isn't terribly related to the previous 2 films (3rd film was abandoned) and appears to be a completely different story and many are even calling it a reboot. I don't pretend to know the Dark Horse lore and I am not familiar with the actual story because it is Hellboy, not Star Wars. I'm not going to devote too much time to this.

My cinema was not 3-D and I think if it was I might have found the film considerably less awful because looking at the action, it is quite obvious that most of what is going on with the camera angles were specifically designed for a 3-D audience.

A vast majority of the dialogue is just dumb and contributes very little to the story but they needed to fill up the 90 minutes with something so I guess this is to be expected. Even Ian McShane couldn't make the trite lines in this movie interesting and I consider him to be one of the best actors alive.

I don't know why Ron Pearlman isn't starring in this film and I guess it doesn't really matter. I do know that he was disappointed that the 3rd film in the originally planned trilogy was cancelled and maybe there was some behind the scenes griping that eliminated him from contention. I don't know... i don't care enough to look into it.

I was yawning so much during this film and this is not something that often happens to me in the theater experience because I genuinely love going to the cinema. This movie is just plain bad, though. I overheard many others in the bathroom talking about the film after they saw it and it appeared as though my opinion was shared by most of the very few people in the seats in an IMAX theater.

If you are considering going to this movie, I would say don't. If you insist on going anyway, perhaps make certain that it is a 3-D showing because the film was obviously designed precisely for that sort of experience - perhaps to distract you from the fact that there is no actual story.

on a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Hellboy 2019 a rating of.....

skip-it-skip-it-good.jpg I can't give it an "Urgh!" rating because I had quite low expectations of the film going in

I never saw the original Hellboy movies, and I was planning to go see this one. But I guess I will not do it, I was not very motivated to do it, and considering your opinion, I think I will not see it until they broadcast it some day on TV and coincidentally there is nothing better to see.

I believe it's because Del Toro wasn't directing it he wasn't that interested in being a part of it. That, and his old age I would assume. As the dude is starting to push towards his 70's. It does suck, as I actually enjoyed the first two Hellboy films and would have liked to see an ending for them. Alas, Del Toro was asking for basically several dump trucks worth of money to come be dumped on him for the budget. Something like 150-170 million, IIRC. Which the studios passed on since the other films only made about that much each time around.

Not surprised that you didn't enjoy this film. I've heard nothing but how incompetent it is. The only review I've listened to that suggested people go see the film was because the serious parts are comically bad, and it has such absurd amounts of gore that it's hilarious. The rest of the reviews I have heard basically say this film went to the Suicide Squad school of movie making, and did a bad job at it to boot.

I don't think he was even offered the part. I figured for as little advertising that I saw for this film it was going to be pretty terrible. I liked the 1st one and though I didn't like the second one much, I liked what they tried to do with the costumes and make-up an such.

If I do recall right this was labeled as a reboot.

I had just read an article the other day that pretty much said the same things that you did here. Hopefully Daniel Dae Kim made more doing this film than he did before he left Hawaii Five 0. Ron Pearlman has to be getting up there so maybe he just physically couldn't handle it. He has three solid decades of credits behind him. According to imdb it looks like he is still really active. Maybe it was a scheduling conflict...

Yeah. I was looking forward to Hellboy... well, number 3.
But this one I thought would be good... then the reviews started coming in So I’m just going to avoid it until it’s on tv

Hellboy sounds like a horror movie. Indeed, there are still many bad movie that playing at cheap ticket prices. But for the Thais it might be worth the price and it can entertain them. in my area there is no cinema so I have never watched movies in theaters while I was staying here.
