I for one didn't know who Andy Samberg was before this movie and maybe a lot of people don't know who he is now. Is he a comic genius? Why does he have such a profound relationship with people like Justin Timberlake? I don't know the answer to these questions... but i do know that I laughed a lot when i saw "Hot Rod."
danger!
I don't even know what inspired me to watch this film because I didn't keep on top of popular cinema until the past couple of years because I lived in South East Asia and was a dive instructor. However, i did end up seeing this movie nearly 10 years ago and it made me laugh a lot. It was true with my friends as well to the point where I can quote things from this film and they know exactly what I am referring to. Their brand of humor is unique in that it is absurd but not quite Adam-Sandler-absurd. Perhaps this is why he appeals to people.
Basically, the story is dumb and I can't believe it ever made it to the screens. Rod is a troubled youth that seems to think that he is a stunt-man but just happens to not be terribly good at it. He also can't grow a mustache and that makes him feel less masculine i guess.
complete with glue-on mustache - Evil Knievel style
He assembles a group of friends that for some reason or another truly believe in his capabilities despite the fact that he doesn't really have any. Plus his motorcycle is actually a 50cc moped.
The antics continue until his step-father needs an operation and for whatever reason Rod feels as though it is on him to get the money necessary for his "conveniently priced surgery" of $50,000. Ian McShane plays his stepfather, and if he hasn't already won an Oscar or at least been nominated, i would be very surprised (I do very little research for these things and just rely on my own feelings.) He does a great job in the movie and his chemistry with Andy Samberg is actually pretty good.
Rod feels as though he has to kick his stepdad's ass before he will respect him
I don't know what type of person would appreciate this film for certain. I guess you would have to be like me in a way. You would need to appreciate silly humor that focuses around emotionally fragile individuals that think the world of themselves despite the fact that that have no actual talent.
I am not going to post the clip here but if you look for "hot rod forest dance scene," you will be able to determine if you might want to watch the whole film as it spoofs on 80's "private internal rage" scenes that were usually reserved for montages or Flashdance.

If you like it, tell me why. If you don't like it, tell me why. I welcome your comments as always.
