Life of the Party: Dumb and boring

Review by @gooddream · 2806d · of Life of the Party

Don't get me wrong, i quite like Melissa McCarthy and i feel as though Spy is one of the best comedies of recent years. I just think the problem with her is that she needs to diversify her characters a bit. This movie was boring and well, pretty cringe at times.

The story is that Deana Miles (McCarthy) thinks her life is going well but then finds out that her husband wants a divorce and we soon find out that she never graduated college because she gave that all up in order to be a mom and wife. Basically she goes back to school just for different reasons than Rodney Dangerfield did and of course, she ends up being (as the name of the film would suggest) quite popular.

She draws plenty of ire from other, more beautiful young girls because this is necessary for progression of the very weak plot. She starts out being an embarrassment to her daughter and ends up being a hero and mentor to her daughter and also the other girls in her house.

The problem with this movie is that, save for a few moments here and there, it just isn't funny. I mean, seeing Melissa get made fun of by popular kids only to redeem herself later is a foregone conclusion isn't it? This is 2 films now that she is in where they simply stole the script from something that was successful 30 years ago and then swapped the male lead out with a woman and voila! make 30 million.

I did not like this movie and skipped a lot of it. Plus there is something about Maya Rudolph (who is also in this) that i find disturbing. I like McCarthy and was delighted to hear that she is going to try her hand at some sort of serious dramatic acting next. Good! Let's give the comedy a rest before everyone gets sick of your shtick!

You correctly noticed everything, with all due respect, the comedy with Melissa McCarthy, which only recently seemed to be a brand and a sign of quality, made me smile no more than a couple of times in a hundred minutes of timekeeping. This is sad and suggestive that our love for a funny fat woman with charming dimples was an annoying mistake and an accidental misunderstanding. If the actress continues to stagnate, exploit the old jokes and try to change herself, her star will finally roll. Then no youth party will definitely save, even with the support of a loving husband-director.

I have read that many of her movies that didn't work were directed by her husband Ben Falcone and this is one of those. She should distance herself professionally from her husband because it is not beneficial for her career, although I understand that it could be a sensitive issue for her marriage
