Do you know whoCory Haim is? How about Charlie Sheen (he was young once,) if not how about Winona Ryder? This was her first time in films.
It is considered one of the most underrated movies of the 80's and I completely agree with this sentiment. This movie was incredible and while i don't think many people will watch it - well, i think you are missing out by not doing so because you will be missing a piece of history.
This coming-of-age story is different from the others in the fact that this type of story was what every filmmaker in the 80's was looking for and very few were able to land (if that makes sense to you.)
The romance, the sports, the locker-room problems, the bullying, and the politics surrounding popularity in high school - are all represented in here. I'm not saying this film is true-to-life but a lot of it is.
A big part of the reason to watch this film is because I love Winona Ryder, and feel as though she has become a fantastic actress throughout the years since this film (her first ever!) and has improved along the way until she did that shoplifting thing and what not. Charlie Sheen is a teenager (or so he is presented in the film) in this and people should really want to see that.
However, none of what i just wrote can take away from the underlying awesomeness of this film. The main character is Lucas Blye (Corey Haim,) and he is a high-school student who is really smart, but wants to be popular but isn't really sure how to make that happen. Because he is small he is constantly bullied but insists on joining the football team to redeem himself and to become "bigger than he is."
I can't tell you more without ruining the film with spoilers but i will say this: This film might be the origin of the "slow clap."
The movie was one of many that followed the whole high-school theme that was very popular in the 80's and also Corey Haim was really a big deal back then but was completely discarded once he was a bit older - which is terribly sad but true - he was no longer wanted once he grew up. Charlie Sheen is in this and plays the part of someone as a teenager, and now he is what? 137 years old? Honestly, you need to watch this.
Lucas is a fantastic film, and even watching the trailer made me a bit teary-eyed because it reminds me of my youth - and Charlie Sheen's - and a time when Corey Haim wasn't dead. It is a good movie.
I know that films have changed a lot since this one. However this is a piece of history and you should watch it anyway... for serious.
