Maximum Overdrive (film): Only writing about this because of King

Review by @gooddream · 2818d · of Maximum Overdrive

Ok, there was a time where people thought that the only thing you had to do was talk about how you were going to make a Stephen King movie and well, everyone would go and see it. This movie was NEARLY proof that this would always work but well, didn't quite make it. They lost over a million dollars because wow, this movie is quite possibly the worst movie ever.

I don't know about you but when i look at this poster i just think "where do I throw my money?" and well, that was likely the approach they had in 1986 whilst making this piece of crap that very well might be the worst movie ever made.

It is difficut for me to say this with a straight face... but the story behind this atrocity is that a comet passes near the earth and all of a sudden all the machines get some sort of artificial intelligence and also a desire to kill the humans. (yeah, it is that absurd)... we have situations where toasters and blenders want nothing other than to kill their operators.

This was pinnacled (which isn't even a word) by the guy who has a truck just happening to have one that well, looks menacing and now the truck doesn't want anything to do with him anymore but instead wants to kill people.... including and especially the people that used to handle said truck

I would love to say that this is me just getting in line with everyone else but honestly, this movie is really really really really (imagine i typed that word 100 times) bad. Despite having Emilio Estevez in the movie (who was trying really hard to be a major star back then) it still was not good at all.

I suppose there are some nostalgic reasons to watch the inevitable showdown in the gas station at the beginning/end/entire film that will inevitably be featured in the trailer.

This movie is rightfully considered one of the worst ever and the only reason why it gets any points at all is because I enjoy giving points to movies that are universally hated.

I remember watching this movie as a teenager in the 80's so I decided to revisit it. As an adult I realize that this movie lacks anything and everything that even resembles a good movie. It's a 97 minute movie with 97 seconds worth of a script, so it got pointless pretty quickly. There was extremely little character development. Now, the only reason I'm giving this movie 2 stars instead of 1 is because the one and only redeeming quality in this dumpster fire is Ellen McElduff's wonderfully memorable and overenthusiastic scenes screaming "WE MADE YOU"

Many questions pop up whilst watching Maximum Overdrive , the tale of a comet that causes earths technology (primarily trucks for some reason) one is "why am i watching this" the other primary question is "how can it be that Stephen King, one of the greatest writers in the history of the world, a man who can make you feel every detail and fully create and populate other worlds filled with detail, but cant direct a movie worth a shit"? in all fairness this is a very fun film, a monumentally fucking silly one, but a load of fun for the same reason, i honestly still cant tell if the film is in on the joke though. One clue to this films baffling incompetence is in the behind the scenes stories, apparently King was at the peak of his cocaine addiction at this point and was also a full blown alcoholic, and looking at the movie with this info, it really does seem like it could only be the product of a dude high on coke. The characters are garish, loud, obnoxious cartoons, the script sounds like it was written by a child and theres a truly strange, painfully dull, extended interlude where they refuel all the possessed trucks to appease them, a scene that is played weirdly straight, much like the rest of the film. This is an odd disaster of a thing, misguided and stupid, even KIng himself referred to it as "a moron movie", but it really does play well as a beer and pizza movie, and some of the truck kills are nicely gory. Plus you have a smattering of early, brief appearances from actors from two of the most iconic shows ever, Breaking Bad's Gustavo Fring himself Giancarlo Esposito, who gets killed by an arcade machine and none other than Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, as a shill, aggravating character whom the movie fails to kill. For real, how did this thing get made? image

What the hell smoked Stephen King? and where do we buy it?. Lacking sense, ridiculous and other adjectives rained during its premiere. And, come on, what were you thinking?

I share that idea with you is a very bad movie, both the director of the film and the actor. regards
