Next (film): A good Nick Cage movie

Review by @gooddream · 2729d · of Next

I normally make fun of Nick Cage because I don't think he is a good actor. He is sometimes, but mostly my disdain for him comes from the fact that he seems to take every project that comes his way. His most notable failures in my opinion are the Ghost Rider films and The Wicker Man - a remake that was just awful and an unnecessary middle finger to the epic original film.

Anyway, this movie Next is a film that barely broke even and I feel as though it should have done better. This is because it is an inventive story idea that is "kind of" a super-powers movie, but a more realistic one.

The story in this film is that Cris Johnson (Cage) is a Vegas magician but actually does have a super-power that isn't just a trick. He can see into the future but only into his own future and only 2 minutes into that. This has some obvious benefits such as winning in casinos, which he does sparingly to avoid attracting too much attention to himself.

I like this movie because it seems like a far more interesting super-power than say, being able to fly. In the correct hands it actually could go unnoticed as most people would just presume that it was a trick. I like to imagine what I would do if I also had these powers. Would I be able to restrain myself the way that he does? I don't think so.

I believe that his movie is one of Cage's better films and while it did make a few million at the box office the budget for this movie was so bloated ($70 million) that the studio saw very little, if any, profit.

If you are like me and mostly don't pay Cage films much mind this is one you should look at anyway. I believe you will be entertained and walk away from it thinking about like I did. It isn't perfect but in this situation I cant really imagine anyone other than Cage playing the role, which is odd.

It's an entertaining movie, even so, I think the best I've seen from Cage was Lord of War, a very good movie.

Nice review man! I also am not sure about Nick Cage, he is in so many um.. average films to put it nicely. Anyway respect to him!

I’ve been away for a while but nice to see you’re still super active and growing massively on steemit!

Can I request a review from you? Have you seen bird box? Everyone is raving about it, and I watched it and personally would not rate it very highly, but I’m wondering what you’d think or do think about it.

After reading such nice reviews , I will surely watch the film, I am not a fan of Nick Cage either but No offence to you I honestly like the movie Ghost Rider.

This is a nice old film, I saw this years ago. I only saw a few films with Cage starring. I quite like him actually, especially in that film where he had his faces swapped with the mafia guy! I cannot remember the name of that film! I wish I had some DVDs of these films.

I guess it was rather easy for him to become famous when his aunt is Talia Shire and his uncle is Francis Ford Coppola though...

I must say, that I don't watch his movies at all nowadays. The Rock, Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off and Con Air is probably my favorite movies with Cage. National Treasure is another good one. Next was cool and all, but didn't become that huge hit I think it could've been.

But hey, if you spend $150,000 on a pet octopus, I guess you'll have to take whatever roles you get...

Mandy was a good Cage flick

I watched that movie but to be honest I barely remember anything about the plot. And I have to agree with you about Cage acting skills. For me in every movie he’s playing he he has the same facial expression.

Nicholas cage is a fictional actor that likes acting films that is a bit super natural and superficial, I do like him as an actor because he is intelligent and creative when it comes to his acting in movies. I will look for this movie and try to watch it @gooddream
