Sandy Wexler (film): Thought it was alright until i learned it was all a lie

Review by @gooddream · 2627d · of Sandy Wexler

Adam Sandler produces some duds and he produces some great films too. Most of what he makes turns around the box office though and we'll never know if this was profitable or not seeing as how it was a Netflix exclusive and never went to cinemas.

The story is about Sandy Wexler, a Hollywood manager who is eclectic and unusual. He isn't terribly successful but it seems as though a lot of Hollywood talent seems to know who he is. The movie is done in a semi-documentary type fashion as many celebrities are offering their comments about Wexler (played by Adam Sandler by the way) throughout the film.

The usual "pals of Adam Sandler" of course jumped on board for a quick paycheck (David Spade, Rob Schneider, Nick Swardson, Chris Rock, Kevin James etc) and for the most part they only have cameos. However, you can look at nearly any Sandler film and this usually happens. At least you can say that Adam is a good real-life friend.

The character Wexler is meant to be loosely based on Adam's own real-life manager Sandy Wernick and at least in the film Sandy is a bit strange, a bit annoying, and extremely dedicated to his clients even though he isn't terribly effective in his methods and suggestions. I watched the first 40 minutes of this film thinking it was a real story even though they make no claim that this is the case at any point in the film.

Unfortunately, for a comedy, it doesn't have very many funny moments and the character Sandy, while I suppose he was meant to be a comedy / drama hybrid, just kind of comes across as boring.

I think that Sandler is actually a very good serious actor and he proves this in other films. I can't say for sure that he was going for serious in this movie, but in my mind it was a failed attempt. I think that since Netflix has Sandler under contract to make however many films he has to make per year that he is pumping out bad scripts and just hanging out with his friends on set until they come up with something or anything at all.

This movie doesn't necessarily make me mad because I have come to expect this from Adam but I believe it fully it deserves the rating of.....

That's a shame. Just watched the trailer and all the cameos look great. Only the main character sucks big time. Disappointing indeed.

I love Adam Sandler and I'm sorry to read in your review that this is not a good comedy movie like the ones I like about him. Anyway, I won't make an a priori judgment and I'll see if I agree with your opinion, friend @gooddream.

When I first read this I was thinking that was the same name his character had in Big Daddy. I really think some of his more mass produced stuff has been much better than the Netflix stuff. It seems like most every review I see for anything he does on Netflix recommends you skip it!
