I never bothered to see what the critics had to say about this one because in 1989 I didn't pay much attention to what film critics said about popular movies (I don't really pay attention now.) This comedy brought together two of the most funny and talented men of their generation in their 3rd film together.

This movie would be unlikely to be made at all today because our hypersensitive society would likely try to suggest that Wilder and Pryor were making light of being blind or deaf, which of course they do not do but that is the major attributes of their characters. Pryor plays "Wally" who is blind and Wilder plays David, who is deaf; they end up becoming friends in a chance encounter and later on accidentally end up getting tangled up in a murder that they of course, did not commit. They also accidentally end up in possession of a special coin that causes them a bunch of problems.

The story isn't terribly important and it is pretty typical to be honest. The only original thing about this is the fact that one of them is blind and the other is deaf, which gives plenty of opportunity for a wide variety of jokes that at least I, and my friends, found very funny back in the day. Also, as was typical in the 80's / 90's, the movie wouldn't be complete without a nude scene which they managed to include (I think it was required back then) in a humorous manor.

despite the mostly negative press, the star-power of these two was able to overpower the criticism and this film went on to make more than $30 million.

I lol'd just watching the trailer. What a great piece of comedy gold this movie is. I, once again, completely disagree with the critics. Sometimes I feel like those guys will say nasty things about any film that isn't so artsy that no one really understands it.
