Small Crimes (film): Sorry Jaime Lannister, this is not a good movie

Review by @gooddream · 2656d · of Small Crimes

It seems that every member of Game of Thrones is / was scrambling to try to make a name for themselves in cinema while the oven is still hot. I can't say I blame them; i would do the same thing if I were in their position.

This is the first one that I have seen from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and while some of it was decent, mostly it was a mess of strange storylines and a whole lot of people getting away with stuff that the police would almost certainly take notice of immediately.

Lannister plays Joe Denton, an ex-cop who is just finishing up a 6-y ear sentence for.... you know what? It doesn't matter. He returns to his hometown to find out that they are less-than-thrilled that he is returning. This sentiment extends to his own parents, with whom he almost immediately starts to argue with.

Through various circumstances he ends up getting involved in the wrong side of the law again and is told to do some stuff for the police force that is less than legal and in exchange they will reconnect him with his ex-wife and his 2 daughters. How this is possible for the police to achieve is beyond me and isn't really explained, but that is just the beginning of the problems for this film.

The major problem with this film is that it is pretty difficult to follow who is screwing who over, where, and why. I would see various people involved in certain murder-oriented scenes and despite presumably having the situation explained just moments before, not have any idea what is going on.

We are introduced to person after person in a vast conspiracy and so little is put into who each person actually is in the equation that I found myself rarely understanding. Also, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau delivers almost all of his dialogue in a barely audible whisper that is meant to be intense but mostly just shows how terrible the sound department / director were at their jobs. I had to turn the subtitles on at one point...

By the time the film wraps up you don't really have any idea what just happened and all you really know is that this small town of 12,000 people has a mob boss (because that's where mob bosses live) corrupt district attorneys covered in scars whose houses are exceptionally easy to break into without making a sound, and a motel that can have gunshots ring out in the early evening and nobody sees witnesses anything yet you can get into a brawl in the middle of the woods and everyone involved is arrested that night.

It's confusing, it's dumb, it's very poorly made, and of course it is a Netflix original.

What a waste of time this movie seems like. when you need to turn on the subtitles to understand what the characters are speaking that particular point turns out to be a fail of the film. anyways keep reviewing.
