I have to admit that for me and I suspect many other people, the name M. Night Shyamalan doesn't really carry much weight anymore. The dude has made too many films that were just duds and for the most part his big twists (which worked out really nicely in 6th sense but not so much in future films) are kind of boring these days.
However, I thought that Split was absolutely fantastic and wasn't even aware it was a tie-in to a trilogy in the Unbreakable series.

Korean is a very strange looking language
James plays a villain in this movie and I really have to admire his chops as an actor because he had to play several different characters since the person he is playing, named Kevin, has 23 different personalities. We don't actually get to see all of them but we are privy to at least 4 and they are very different people.
One of these personalities has supernatural strength and they attempt to explain in the film that this might actually be possible with people that have dissociative identity disorder (DID)

Whether or not this is true or not, I don't know and I'm not going to look into it. However, one thing I do know is that James McAvoy went through a dramatic body transformation for this role and that is quite an accomplishment for anyone. Dude is normally a pretty average size person and they put him in full "beast mode" for this role.
While I didn't really enjoy "Unbreakable" and I am yet to watch "Glass" I do appreciate it when films approach a super-hero type plot using somewhat believable traits. "Kevin" did not get his abilities because some moon rocks fell out of the sky, nor can he do crazy things like fly or shoot lasers out of his eyes, he is just incredibly strong in one of his personalities, and very intelligent in another one, but he has no control over which personality appears at any point in time (at least not that we can tell.)
Basically, i like the idea of his powers being more relatable as i think that Marvel superheros, especially as portrayed in recent films, are over-powered, especially Captain Marvel.
Mostly because of McAvoy's stellar performance, this film stays gripping from start to finish. I don't know if I am perhaps giving it too much in the way of props because it appears as though the professional and public opinion rates this film just slightly above average. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time that I didn't agree with the masses.
