I, like most people, am excited when I see that Clint Eastwood is directing another film because 2 of the films he has directed are in my top 50 of all time - it might be higher, i don't really have a list.
There are two major problems with this movie and the main one is that there is not much of a story here. What these fellas did is no doubt amazing and heroic (I don't know how I managed to not hear about it in the news) but there isn't 90 minutes of material here and the actual event in question is over in a few minutes.
they tackle this guy on a train preventing tragedy, story finished
The second problem with this film is that Eastwood decided to put the actual guys in the film which I will agree is a novel idea. The downside is that none of them are actors and despite their best efforts it is quite evident that they, well, are not actors. I realize that Eastwood had taken non-actors and made them major characters in the film (successfully) in Gran Torino, but this one... sorry guys, you are heroes and I admire the crap out of your courage, but the acting is really poor.
Please don't get me wrong: I am not attempting to belittle your accomplishment because what an amazing thing to pull off. You definitely deserve all the praise you are getting and more... for the actual event in Paris... not for this film.
The actors they chose to represent the 3 men as children are also terrible actors and I can't help but wonder if this was intentional in order to not make the adult non-actors look bad.
The story, which is basically about something that was over in a minute and a half, is played out whilst explaining these guys' entire lives, which i suppose was necessary if we are going to have a feature-length film. Eastwood usually enjoys taking on patriotic projects and I don't fault him for that, but i feel as though this movie while the message is great, was never meant to be a movie. Maybe a short film.
This trailer is just over 2 minutes long and encapsulates pretty much the entire story in those 2 minutes. The other 92 minutes of the film's run-time are filler and that simply makes this movie boring. Not to denigrate the dudes' achievement because that involves a level of heroism that 99% of the planet don't have in them, but this film is a dud.
