Tommy Boy (film): A great laugh but probably only if you appreciate Farley

Review by @gooddream · 2826d · of Tommy Boy

Chris Farley and David Spade don't just have great on-screen chemistry, they were actually very close friends in real life and this is probably why neither one of them were terribly capable of achieving much on their own.

Tommy Callahan III (Chris Farley) barely graduates from college and returns to his hometown to accept an executive position at Callahan autoparts. A position he clearly does not deserve and does not have the mental fortitude to handle. Tommy is assigned his father's assistant Richard Hayden (David Spade) to help him settle in at the company.

Tommy's father, "Big Tom," tragically dies at his own wedding and now the company has to be handed down to his good-natured, but rather dumb son "Tommy Boy." There are financial problems with the company and the banks are very reticent to provide any additional funding in the absence of Tom Sr. at the helm. The only way that they will loan the money to Callahan Autoparts is if they manage to sell 500,000 sets of brake pads within a certain time frame. Thus begins Tommy and Richard's quest across the country to a string of sales meetings.

What makes this movie great is that Farley and Spade work so well together and the fact that one of them is fat and dumb and the other is skinny and clever, make their interactions with one another even better. Most of the comedy is quite juvenile, but this isn't exactly a film that would be submitted in Cannes.

anyway, i laughed a lot and if you are like me you might as well.

The downside of this film is that Farley being a uncoordinated oaf with good intentions kind of wears off after a while and there really isn't much more to his and Spade's humor than that. It takes me longer than others to get sick of this, but I can understand why some people wouldn't really like a film that is basically a 1.5 hour SNL skit. This movie did reasonably well at the box office but not great.

One of my favourite comedies of all time! I loved it and still do. Yes it's a bit corny in some spots but I think Spade and Farley worked quite well together. A shame that such a huge talent was taken from us way too soon. Great review!

I liked the plot of the film but it was a little boring in the starting anyways I must appreciate your punctual and dedicated way to handle this platform. its an inspiration as i barely manages to grab out time in a day or two. keep up with good work!

Tommy boy is an excellent comedy but the humor in it I was not impressed about. It's still got a great storyline for the plot. Chris Farley and David spade were both good in it. I do like the scene when Chris Farley and David spade are at this motel and Chris Farley's character goes "fat guy in a little coat" that part made me laugh. Still though the movie wasn't that great but the storyline is unique.

This movie takes me back. To a moment when SNL grads, Adam Sandler and Chris Farley both had a movie coming out, and Farley had a cameo in "Billy Madison," and then his own movie, this one, did just as well as "Billy Madison" at the box office. Farley owned the comedy world for the briefest moment.

For that brief moment, he proved that not only could he do slapstick, fall flat on his face, smash the stuffing out of a car door, fight with a deer inside a car, bicker hilariously with David Spade, but he could also turn sentimental on a dime, and get you to care about his feckless schmo of a character. Take the moment he dances with Brian Dennehy, it's so dumb and funny, then Dennehy dies, and Farley makes like a helpless big-eyed man-boy deer-caught-in-headlights and you care about him, as if it's a serious film, after all.

For me, that's what David Spade never had, relatability, a great sarcastic sidekick who could never successfully headline a movie himself, cos he struggled to get you to care. Except when he was with Farley, cos Farley's vulnerabilit seemed to rub off on him. Like you say, a superb double act cut short by Farley's passing.

Life's so short, man, and Farley's was super short. Adam Sandler would go on to become a comedy icon, and Farley would be forgotten.

Not by me. For me, Farley is all of us, stumbling, smiling, shining briefly like stars, before we all pass on like Farley to that great beyond.

RIP Chris Farley, see you when I see you, you loveable lug. :)

I always felt like Farley was a bit of a John Candy ripoff, but I loved him with David Spade. They made some great slapstick together. I was not a big fan of either on SNL, but to be fair, SNL is really hit and miss. So often they miss the best opportunities with jokes.

Don't forget Spade's one good sans Farley movie though, Joe Dirt. That was funny as hell! It is so corny but somehow had me cracking up all the way through. I especially love the bits with Christopher Walken! Classic.

As a big fan of Chris Farley, I enjoyed this post and sadly never saw this film. I think mainly b/c I just never found David Spade's humor comical. To me it is so dry it falls flat while Chris Farley was always off-the-hook boisterous / hilarious! I think he was at his very best as motivational speaker, 'Matt Foley'! It is neck & neck but my two favorite comedians have to be him and John Candy with Bill Burr now the funniest guy out there right now.
