Velvet Buzzsaw (Netflix film): Artsy, but still not very good

Review by @gooddream · 2689d · of Velvet Buzzsaw

When I say that this film is artsy I don't just mean that it is attempting to be artistic and vague, it is actually focusing the people that control what we consider to be modern art - and at least that part of this movie is interesting.

Let me make this clear at the onset; this movie is not good and I can't really understand what they were going for with it. It is filled with stars of the highest caliber and their intention was great, but mostly it just completely fails as a movie because the plot is simply dumb. I did enjoy the aspects of the film that present the art-world as a bunch of pretentious people that think they are more enlightened than everyone else despite the fact that in many cases they are not. I often struggle to attempt to understand why the "art" that is presented in modern times is considered to be valuable and at least got a kick out of this film "kinda" making fun of that.

This film is very slow at first but then the main part of the movie is introduced when Josephina (Zawe Ashton ) discovers a man dead in the hallway of a condo building. She discovers that he was an artist and then working through the various powers that be manages to obtain all of his works because he is very talented (as a side note i would like to present that this dead person's art is something I actually would enjoy as opposed to a vast majority of "art" that ends up in modern art displays with these days are just a bunch of garbage.)

These paintings end up being immenesely popular in the art world and everyone in the cast scrambles to get their piece of it. The problem is that the artwork in question is cursed in some way and everyone who gets involved with it ends up being tracked down and killed by the demons contained inside.

It's dumb. That's the problem with this film. The entire idea behind it is dumb. However this could all be forgiven if it weren't for the fact that everything that occurs and everyone who dies as a consequence wasn't so predictable and implausible.

They atttempt to go for a horror approach but in the same time nothing that happens in the film is even remotely scary. It is also one of those situations where no one in the group ever experiences something supernatural unless no one else is around . Therefore, when these incredible "you-are-going-to-get-killed-by-art-demons!" sequences happen you can't help but ask about how it is that these people are the only ones that can see all of the stuff that is happening to them.

In one particularly stupid scene an art dealer walks into a hallucinated art gallery and is killed by the artwork. After she dies, the entrance and all the artwork is gone and now she is superimposed into a piece of graffiti on the side of the wall adjacent to where she was when the entire thing began.

Once she is dead, the entire gallery that she just was in and made phone calls to other people from is gone. This is very convenient for the dark underworld that is killing people for reasons that are not explained.

This film is trying to be horror (but it isn't scary) while also being vaguely artistic (despite the fact that the storyline is VERY easy to follow) and in the end I finished it and struggled to stay awake. The obviously had a massive budget because they hired Jake Gyllenhaal and got him to be naked in the film, Rene Russo (who I actually like), and John Malkovich (who I don't like nor do i think is talented but whatever).... This movie in my mind is a failure because it has no identity. It isn't scary and it isn't artistic. If anything I suppose I could appreciate the fact that they were poking fun at the art world, but that is about it for me. Sorry, not sorry.

on a scale of "urgh!" to "wowsers Penny!" Velvet buzzsaw gets a very enthusiastic

"Skipsies!"

Velvet Buzzsaw has some interesting ideas floating around it it, but it never quite coalesced into something enjoyable if I’m being honest. The satire of the art world wasn’t as cutting as it could have been and the kills were cooler in concept than execution.

So to make my point of what I liked though, I’ll have to quibble slightly with one thing in your review. The art didn’t kill everyone, just the ones whose connection to art as a whole was for less than pure reasons. This is why the assistant and two of the artists survive because the experience pushed away from a pretentious and corrupted connection with the art world. The assistant leaves and the two artist return to making art for themselves rather than money. It’s no coincidence that they live. This means that the other deaths were literal manifestations of how their relationship to art was compromised. It might be getting torn apart by the subject of your worst reviews or becoming literally a part of the lowbrow graffiti art that you have contempt for. I kind of dug how their deaths functioned that way.

I guess my point is that the film makes the same point that you do here. The art was generally pretentious and made for the wrong reasons. That’s why they had to die.

End of the day, it was a film that didn’t go far enough into either comedy or horror to be particularly memorable. Not quite a skipsies, but pretty damn disappointing.
