Walk Hard: hilarious if you like silly

Review by @gooddream · 2961d · of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

This film came out right around the time that "Ray" and "Walk the Line" had great success at the box office. If you are not familiar with these films they are also great and are biopics about Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, respectively.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story is about Dewey Cox, and of course he isn't a real person.

walkhard.jpg they also decided to have a little fun spoofing the famous Morrison photo

It follows the ridiculous trials and tribulation of Dewey's upbringing and all the tramatic things that happened in order to inspire him to greatness. His slightly older brother was clearly his father's favorite because it didn't matter what they were doing, his brother was more talented than Dewey. This eventually leads to a defining moment in Dewey's life when he accidentally cuts his brother clean in half in a play machete fight in the family barn. Despite the community doctor rushing to the scene, Nate (his brother) dies anyway.

Dewey goes on to get a shot at stardom in an incredible long-shot when record company executives visit the club Dewey is working in. Only Dewey isn't in the band, he mops the floors there. However, in a huge stroke of luck the singer of the band breaks his hands and get laryngitis on that day so Dewey fills in for him. These are the sort of absurd situations that Dewey finds himself in throughout the movie. He also later accidentally invents punk rock but decides he doesn't like it because he gets distracted by an attractive girl.

*there's briefly boobies in this... it was unintentional*

I think the main thing I like about this movie is that despite the fact that it is silly it is actually a really good story and even has some touching moments. John C. Reilly, who plays Dewey is actually a quite accomplished singer (he was in Chicago after all) and he recorded all the vocals in the film. Reilly performed multiple songs live before the movie's release. The songs are normally mildly absurd but you will find them getting stuck in your head later on in the day because they are also quite good.

It should come as no surprise that this film didn't take home any Oscars but well, I don't think they had any intention of doing so.

The scene in the movie where he's trying to avoid his old ways and goes "oh the temptations!" and then walks into another room where the Temptations are singing and again goes 'oh the temptations' still gets me to this day.

Those stinkin songs are so stinkin catchy. I too didn’t want it stuck in my head, then...BAM! There it is. Reilly is not really one of my favorite actors, but come to think of it (hmmmmmmmmm) I like a lot of the movies he’s in. I have Step Brothers and Taladega Nights in my dvd collection. Guess that says something. I did not know, (Thank You) that he was in Chicago??!! Wild stuff.

This kind of parody is hard to sustain for an hour and a half, and "Walk Hard" does gets wearying at times. But the humor is so outrageous, the original music so much fun and Reilly so good - both while hamming it up in the role and in singing the songs - that it's irresistible.
