What's Eating Gilbert Grape (film): Just found out it lost money.... huh?

Review by @gooddream · 2829d · of What's Eating Gilbert Grape

This movie is good. It has a star-studded lineup and a compelling story that makes you laugh and cry as well as feel pity and anger. I didn't know until about an hour ago that this movie failed to make it's relatively small budget back.

Recognize any of those faces? Well that is a quite young Leo DiCaprio before he started to lecture everyone on environmental decay from his private jet. He has an unusual role in this film and he nailed it. This film resulted in his first Academy Award nomination and well, i think a win for this role would have been better than The Revenant.

Johnny Depp plays Gilbert Grape, a young fella who has a lot of responsibility since his father died. He is "the man of the family" (are we allowed to say that anymore?) and he, with the help of his sisters, has to financially and emotionally look after his extremely fat mother, and Arnie (Leo DiCaprio) who is mentally "challenged."

Gilbert wants a regular life, particularly after meeting Becky, a girl who was just passing through and they like eachother but a romance is too difficult to start because of all the responsibilities that Gilbert has in his life.

I don't feel I am selling this one so well. However this is because there are some major aspects of the movie that you will encounter if you choose to watch it that well, i don't want to spoil for you.

The only problem some viewers might have with this is that there really isn't much story there so much as it is just an unusual family with some very real issues. In that regard it can be seen as a bit slow. However, the acting that takes place between Johnny and Leo is top drawer and unless someone wants to prove me wrong it is the only time they have ever been in a film together. Although i don't generally rate films like this very high, I believe this one deserves it and is one of the few films that I think Leo was worth what they paid him.

@gooddream nice movie, nice actors, nice director, I would personally give it an "8"... But I understand that it's a bit slow for the new generations who think movies like "Guardians Of The Galaxy 2" is the best movie ever... Thanks for sharing this review.

As many have said, the first time I saw this slice of "unusual" life film, I was certain that the actor playing Arnie was mentally handicapped. This was the performance to end all. I have been around mentally challenged people who were the carbon copy of the character that Leonardo portrayed. I do no think that anyone else could have pulled this off without looking ridiculous. Our protagonist, Mr. Johnny Depp did his usual amazing work, but it is the performance by Leo that makes this film a must see. I just saw it again tonight, and was blown away again. Acting schools must have copies of this in their files!! Will always be a Leo fan for this one film alone.

I remembered when I first watched this movie. It touches me deep down my heart . There's many questions, and yes as you said, pitty, anger, joy and wanders have played my mind. It's kind of depressive movie for me. But is also inspiring. It's all all over and wonderful.

The fact that at their young age, they have already portrayed their characters well , really deserves the fame they have right now.

I love how Arnie was. His character touched my heart and I really like him a lot

After reading the review I found this film to be worth watching, a catchy story with good star cast.I loved the fact that The review was simple and easy to read, instead of much philosophy. this kept my interest intact. keep flourishing!

I like Leonardo Dicaprio from this movie with two impressive roles. Looking backstage for the movie, I saw the moment Leo shifted from normal to Arnie's wild look in less than a second.

I haven't had the fortune to see this movie, but with your excellent review you have left me with the bug of curiosity to look for it and enjoy it. I see Leonardo Di Caprio very young and I wonder if this would be his first film or one of the first. Thanks for your publication, @gooddreams, I will be attentive to your blog. Good night.

This is one of my favorite Leonardo Dicaprio movies that I could watch a thousand times and still enjoy. Every time I see it, I cry. I feel Leo eating it in his special boy performance. There you could see what a great actor he was going to be. He is the centre of the film. He even overshadowed Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis with his performance. I'm not so happy with that score, but good. Greetings and nice day, @gooddream.

    Q. what it takes to make an evergreen movie?

    A. Take both Leonardo and Jhonny in a movie and add a great script!

Sadly,I didn't yet saw that movie! But I will soon, the story looks interesting and look at their faces! So young!!!

Thanks for such a nice review!

    stay healthy and steem on!!
