Yesterday was the day to stay in our pajamas, go to bed with a bowl full of popcorn, and watch nice, fun, fresh family movies; to have a good time, distract ourselves and share moments together, finally, that's what it's all about. We had several proposals in mind, but the love for food made us agree to watch Abe, an American film that tells the cultural and religious conflicts experienced by a boy of only 12 years old, which he manages to overcome through the flavors provided by the art of cooking. I think it was a great decision to choose this movie because the plot can be a bit controversial and that allowed us to discuss to know the point of view of our children regarding this topic.
Ayer fue el día de quedarnos en pijamas, meternos todos a la cama con un bowl de cotufas, y ver películas familiares agradables, divertidas, frescas; como para pasar un buen rato, distraernos y compartir momentos juntos, finalmente de eso se trata. Teníamos varias propuestas en mente, pero el amor por la comida nos hizo coincidir con ver Abe, una película americana que relata los conflictos culturales y religiosos que vive un niño de tan solo 12 años, los cuales él logra superar a través de los sabores que brinda el arte de la cocina. Creo que fue un gran atino elegir esta película porque la trama puede ser un poco controversial y eso nos permitió debatir para conocer el punto de vista de nuestros hijos con respecto a este tema.
I will tell you a little about the story of Avraham, Ibrahim, Abraham, or Abe, as this boy really likes to be called, if you notice it is the same name, but each side of his divided family gives it the connotation of their own culture. Abe's parents belong to families that historically have been at odds with each other, some are Palestinians and the others are Hebrews, you can imagine what this is about.
Abe, who has always lived in Brooklyn with his parents, has not received from them any influence towards any religion, as both are agnostic, which justifies having a family for so long despite their origins. However, his paternal family tries to involve him in the Muslim traditions, while his maternal family tries to involve him in the Jewish traditions and beliefs, a situation that obviously has Abe frustrated, as he feels committed to them and does not want to disappoint them, much less offend them; on the contrary, he tries to keep the whole family united beyond their religions.
Les cuento un poco de que va la historia de Avraham, Ibrahim, Abraham, o Abe, como realmente le gusta a este chico que lo llamen, si notan es el mismo nombre, pero cada lado de su divida familia le da la connotación propia de su cultura. Los padres de Abe pertenecen a familias que históricamente se han visto enfrentadas, pues unos son palestinos y los otros hebreos, ya se podrán imaginar por donde viene la cosa.
Abe, quien ha vivido siempre en Brooklyn con sus padres no ha recibido de ellos influencia alguna hacia ninguna religión, pues ambos son agnósticos, lo que justifica haber construido una familia por tanto tiempo a pesar de sus raíces. Sin embargo, su familia paterna intenta involucrarlo en las costumbres musulmanas, mientras que la materna lo hace hacía las creencias y tradiciones judías, situación que obviamente tiene a Abe contrariado, pues se siente comprometido con ellos no queriéndolos decepcionar, mucho menos ofender; por el contrario, procura mantener a toda la familia unida más allá de sus religiones.
Unlike other guys his age, Abe is not obsessed with sports cars, nor the loud music that drives teenagers crazy, nor the fashion of his generation, his hobby is far from that, he is passionate about food, gastronomy, cooking. A good summer plan for Abe is to tour the city's food fairs to taste new flavors and replicate them in his own kitchen.
Following his passion, Abe, without telling his parents, enters the kitchen of a friendly Brazilian chef to perfect his style through new culinary techniques. At first, his experience focuses only on taking out the garbage and washing dishes, a test imposed by the chef to prove Abe's commitment and discipline in the kitchen. After a while, perseverance pays off and Abe earns the confidence to join the team of cooks, learning the art of cooking, which beyond following recipes, is about experimenting with food, learning to combine it according to its taste, smell, texture, color, chemistry; even according to its history, tradition, and region.
A diferencias de otros chicos de su edad, a Abe no le obsesionan los autos deportivos, ni la música estruendosa que enloquece a los adolescentes, tampoco la moda propia de su generación, su afición dista mucho de eso, a él le apasiona la comida, la gastronomía, la cocina. Un buen plan de verano para Abe es hacer un recorrido por las ferias de comida de la ciudad para probar nuevos sabores y replicarlos en su propia cocina.
Siguiendo su pasión, Abe, a espaldas de sus padres, se adentra en la cocina de un simpático chef brasilero para perfeccionar su estilo a través de nuevas técnicas culinarias. Al principio su experiencia se centra solo en sacar la basura y lavar las vajillas, una prueba impuesta por el chef para probar su compromiso y disciplina en la cocina. Pasado un tiempo, la constancia rinde sus frutos y Abe se gana la confianza de unirse al equipo de cocineros, aprendiendo así el arte de cocinar, que más allá de seguir recetas, se trata de experimentar con los alimentos, de aprender a combinarlos según su sabor, olor, textura, color, química; incluso según su historia, tradición y región.
While his dreams of becoming a cook are fulfilled, at home the conflicts associated with the religious indoctrination of his grandparents to turn him into a Jew, on the one hand, and a Muslim, on the other, are accentuated. Mientras se cumplen sus sueños de ser cocinero, en casa se acentúan los conflictos asociados al adoctrinamiento religioso de sus abuelos por convertirlo en judío, por un lado, y en musulmán, por el otro. Ante las marcadas diferencias entre ambas familias, Abe idea un plan para reunirlos a todos en una misma mesa, pretendiendo que sea la comida un punto de encuentro y reconciliación que anteponga la unión familiar por encima de cualquier desavenencia cultural.
Watching the movie and observing the behavior of both the Muslim and Jewish families, I questioned many times how Abe's parents had managed to stay together as a married couple with their families being so extreme and antagonistic to each other. Frankly, I think in real life that would be quite complicated, very unlikely in my opinion, unless a lot of distance is marked. For Latinos that kind of conflict is rare, on this side of the world we don't deal with disputes associated with culture or religion, so many might not understand how difficult it must be for a child to have to deal with that kind of situation, when he just wants to enjoy the company of his grandparents, without it meaning to define a religious tendency that favors one or the other. In fact, if we appeal to the belief in free will that was bestowed upon us at the beginning of time, Abe should be free to make his own decisions when the time comes. Imposing a religion is beyond my thoughts, but I respect beliefs in this regard.
Viendo la película y observando el comportamiento de ambas familias, la musulmana y la judía, me cuestioné muchas veces cómo habían logrado los padres de Abe mantenerse unidos como matrimonio siendo sus familias tan extremistas y antagónicas entre sí. Francamente creo que en la vida real eso sería bastante complicado, muy poco probable en mi opinión, a menos que se marque mucha distancia. Para los latinos ese tipo de conflictos es poco frecuente, de este lado del charco no nos enfrentamos a disputas asociadas a la cultura o a la religión, por lo que muchos podrían no comprender lo difícil que debe ser para un niño tener que lidiar con ese tipo de situaciones, cuando él solo quiere disfrutar de la compañía de sus abuelos, sin que ello signifique definir una tendencia religiosa que favorezca a uno u otro. De hecho, si apelamos a la creencia del libre albedrío que nos fue conferido al principio de los tiempos, Abe debería estar en la libertad de tomar sus propias decisiones llegado el momento. Imponer una religión sobrepasa mis pensamientos, pero respeto las creencias al respecto.
I really liked this movie for all the theme that revolves around it, it is a very dramatic theme in fact, which they knew how to show through a fresh, pleasant comedy, whose script cleverly knew how to adapt to the exciting world of cooking, which ends up softening the plot avoiding the controversy. I love movies, series, and/or TV shows related to cooking, and I like much more when children are involved in this world, something I'm a fan of watching Masterchef Junior, it delights me to see children so young devise recipes to please the palate of their diners; I am one of those who think that in the strictly digital future that is to come, gastronomy will be the connecting thread with the real world.
Me gustó mucho esta película por todo el tema que gira alrededor de ella, es un tema bastante dramático de hecho que supieron mostrar a través de una comedia fresca, agradable, cuyo guion inteligentemente supieron adecuar con el apasionante mundo de la cocina, lo que termina por suavizar la trama evadiendo la controversia. Me encantan las películas, series y/o programas de TV vinculados a la cocina, y me gusta mucho más cuando se involucran a los niños en este mundo, por algo soy fan de ver Masterchef Junior, me deleita ver a niños de tan corta edad idear recetas para agradar el paladar de sus comensales; soy de las que piensa que en ese futuro estrictamente digital que está por venir, la gastronomía será el hilo conductor con el mundo real.
Although it is not the kind of film that you can qualify as a favorite aspiring to many awards, for me it has many redeemable points, among which highlights the education, not only related to gastronomy, in which by the way you could learn that if you combine cream of tartar with baking soda you get baking powder, but also to history and culture, in this case concerning Israel and Palestine.
I recommend it, yes, it is a nice movie that can be enjoyed as a family, that can be discussed from different perspectives, either as children or as parents. I think it has a lot of conversation pieces, it is worthy of a chance, if you dare to watch it, it is available on Netflix. By the way, Noah Schnapp's performance is great, that boy has an angel that transcends the screen.
Si bien no es del tipo de película que puedas calificar como favorita aspirando muchos reconocimientos, para mi tiene muchos puntos rescatables, dentro de los que destaca la educación, no solo la vinculada a la gastronomía, en la que por cierto podrías aprender que si combinas cremor tártaro con bicarbonato obtienes polvo de hornear; sino también a la historia y a la cultura, en este caso la concerniente a Israel y Palestina.
La recomienzo, si, es una obra bonita que se puede disfrutar en familia, que se puede discutir desde distintas perspectivas, bien sea la de hijos, o la de padres. Creo que tiene mucha tela que cortar, es digna de una oportunidad, si se animan a verla, está disponible en Netflix. Por cierto, la actuación de Noah Schnapp es genial, ese niño tiene un ángel que traspasa la pantalla.
