In a few days, it will be Three Kings Day, which will officially put an end to the Christmas season, and it will not be until 10 or 11 months from now that we will again be contagious with the magic of Christmas. In that sense, I have tried to see all the premieres of series and movies of this holiday season before they disappear from the top of the main streaming networks.
There are many movies that are released these days, from new releases to the usual classics. Particularly, the latter are my favorites, especially when they have been versions in new formats, as in the case of Scrooge, A Christmas Carol. The classic tale by novelist Charles Dickens has been remake dozens of times since its publication in 1843, some more focused on sobering drama, others animated to captivate children's audiences. All versions recreate the story of the old miser Ebenezer Scrooge.
Scrooge is a greedy, usurious old man who spends his days making his wealth grow at the expense of the suffering of those who have no choice but to resort to his unscrupulous lending program. Despite his comfortable financial position, Scrooge is not a man open to helping his fellow man, nor by any stretch of the imagination could he be a man who honors altruistic action, he is his only priority.
But Scrooge is not only a man incapable of empathizing with the pain of others, but he is denied the possibility of loving and being loved. With his despot and rude attitude, he distances everyone, even those closest to him, denying himself the opportunity to live in family, harmony, and fraternity. This has led him to be a lonely man.
One day, his deceased partner, who was also a miserly man, decides to appeal to his friend's conscience before it is too late. A wake-up call to make amends in life for what is impossible to do in death. That is why Scrooge is visited by ghosts, fairies, or any other entity depending on the version of the story. The objective is always the same, to make him reflect on his past, a way to see what he could have been or what could have triggered his personality. Then they show him his current reality, and finally, the inevitable future that awaits him if he does not change his attitude and repent for his bad actions.
Basically, this is the story that year after year comes to our TV screens in different versions. This Christmas has been no exception, this time it is a beautiful animated version, which incorporated scenes typical of a musical, which gives personality to the work. In addition, figures of the calibre of Oliva Colman have contributed with their voices to give life to the characters.
Two years ago I shared here in my blog the review of the version starring Jim Carrey, I could have done it with many other versions that I have also liked, including the lesser-known as version of The Flintstones, which needless to say, is worth seeing. However, I loved this new version that was released at the beginning of last December on Netflix, because, although it keeps the original essence of the story, it has certain aspects of originality in the way the story is told, certainly less disturbing than other previous versions.
Although this new version in animated format may not surpass classic versions such as Mickey Mouse when it comes to pleasing the little ones at home, I think it is a film that through the magic of animation conveys the original message, which is none other than to take advantage of every moment of life to make amends for our mistakes, understanding that by doing so we positively influence the future, the future of others and our own. In particular, I loved the setting, the character design, and of course, the music, which I found beautiful, and at the same time decisive in the way the story of Ebenezer Scrooge is told.
Sometimes what we have experienced in the past hardens our souls, we say and do things that hurt those around us, and we believe them to be correct because perhaps we have already lived them, or suffered them. This accumulation of resentment makes us lose empathy for the suffering of others, and over time, without even realizing it, we carve a destiny similar to that of Mr. Scrooge. Even so, life gives us the opportunity every day for redemption, it is up to us to understand that the actions of the present will have consequences in the future and that every good deed will always be rewarded with the satisfaction of having done the right thing, which in the long run translates into the longed-for inner peace, something that cannot be bought even with all the wealth in the world.
This new version of A Christmas Carol is the same story we already know, but with different nuances that make it less somber, but just as sobering.
