I don't always agree with Netflix's suggestions, but this time it was a total success. I have a special predilection for series, novels, films, or documentaries based on the post-war period, with the big difference that this time the series that I am going to review takes place in the future, and the post-war period to which it refers arises after a third world war that devastates nations and creates a marked gap between existing societies.
The Madrid we know today is in the future a town divided in two, whose line is separated by a barrier. On one side, members of the political regime, officials of the dictatorship, a society that lives with the privileges granted by power; on the other side, the middle class and the poor, submerged in misery and abandonment, subjected to the control of the State and its handouts.
The Barrier is a series from Spain that I recently enjoyed on Netflix, which was also broadcasted in Spain on open signal. A story with which it was easy to feel identified considering the Venezuelan political situation, with The Barrier I felt that reality was interwoven with fiction, I came to feel repulsion for the despot and miserable characters, but above all, I felt indignation for those who suffer the same needs as their peers preferred to serve the regime as a consequence of political fanaticism.
That is how I came to hate Begoña because I know many Begoñas in real life, a woman who, just like other people, lives in poverty, suffers the same miseries, but far from expressing a voice of protest, applauds abuses and corruption in exchange for a plate of food, and betrays dissidence without decorum.
In that Madrid of the future that is described in the series, the city is divided into two sectors, sector 1 and sector 2, and that division is demarcated by a barrier that is heavily guarded by military men who are servile to the regime. Crossing that barrier is the difference between scarcity and abundance, between wealth and poverty, I would say without fanaticism that this barrier separates good from evil.
Not being enough the political crisis that the city is going through, to all its hardships is added the arrival of a virus so far incurable, a virus that affects everyone without distinction of social classes, condemning them to death. As it happens in our reality, the privileged sector has access to technology, is guaranteed the resources of the State, has everything at its disposal, which facilitates them to make experimental studies in search of an effective cure at any cost, no matter how inhumane it may be or seem. With all the power in your favor, imagine that the cure is on the other side of the barrier... wouldn't you cross it?
How not to feel identified with this series, sincerely feel like living a déjà vu, firstly because of the political, social and economic aspect of the story; shortages, arbitrary arrests, persecution, totalitarianism, in short, any resemblance to reality... And secondly, because it is difficult not to associate the topic of the virus with the current pandemic and with all the conspiracy theories raised in relation to its origin, and of course, to those that have emerged regarding the creation of the vaccine that today represents the life expectancy for the world's population.
13 chapters that made me love and hate the series, but that undoubtedly caught me in such a way that it only took me two days to devour it all. I am obviously looking forward to the possibility of a second season, I hope it will be very soon.
