On this occasion I would like to give you my point of view and a brief reflection about the content of a 2002 movie that I have seen again, called John Q, whose plot, although very criticized by some media for its excessive realism, I found it very interesting and very current.

En esta ocasión quisiera exponerles mi punto de vista y una breve reflexión acerca del contenido de una película del año 2002 que he vuelto a ver, llamada John Q, cuya trama, aunque muy criticada por algunos medios por su excesivo realismo, me pareció muy interesante y muy actual.

John Q is the original title and "extreme situation" is how we know it in Venezuela. It is a film directed by Nick Cassavetes, son of famed director John Cassavetes, who tries to follow in his father's footsteps, although it is not easy to imitate his father's excellent work.

This 2002 film stars Denzel Washington, Kimberly Elise, James Woods, Robert Duvall, Ray Liotta and Anne Heche.

John Q es el título original y "situación extrema" fue como la conocimos en Venezuela. Es una película dirigida por Nick Cassavetes, hijo del afamado director John Cassavetes, quien trata de seguir los pasos de su padre, aunque no es tares fácil imitar la excelente labor de su padre. Esta película del año 2002 está protagonizada por Denzel Washington, Kimberly Elise,James Woods, Robert Duvall, Ray Liotta y Anne Heche.

The contex / El contexto

This drama is based on true events and tells the story of John Q. Archibald (Denzel Washington), a simple family man who faces the difficult situation of seeing his son Michael (Daniel Smith) suffering from a serious heart disease that leads him to need an urgent heart transplant. The problem worsens when John learns at the hospital that his insurance does not cover the surgery and the hospital director (Anne Heche) and the attending physician (James Woods), inform him that the operation has a cost of $ 250,000 and that in order to place the name of his son on the list of recipients must pay the sum of $ 75,000.

Este drama está basado en hechos reales y narra la historia de John Q. Archibald (Denzel Washington), un sencillo padre de familia que enfrenta la difícil situación de ver a su hijo Michael (Daniel Smith) padeciendo de una grave enfermedad cardíaca que le lleva a necesitar un urgente trasplante de corazón. El problema se agrava cuando John se entera en el hospital que su seguro no le cubre dicha intervención quirúrgica y la directora del hospital (Anne Heche) junto al médico tratante (James Woods), le informan que la operación tiene un costo de 250 mil dólares y que para poder colocar el nombre de su hijo en la lista de receptores debe cancelar la suma de 75 mil dólares.

There begins the race against time and against the existing health care system for John and his family. No matter what he has to do or where he has to go to try to raise the money and save Michael's life.

Allí comienza la carrera contra el tiempo y contra el sistema de salud existente de John y su familia. No importa lo que tenga que hacer ni a donde tenga que llegar para tratar de reunir el dinero y salvar la vida de Michael.

My point of view and reflection/Mi punto de vista y reflexión:

In my opinion it is not an extraordinary film worthy of an Oscar, but it is a good movie to watch with the whole family, with excellent performances by the protagonists and a beautiful message that shows how far a father's sacrificial love for his son goes. In addition, the film exposes a horrible reality that occurs in clinics and hospitals around the world, the commodification of health.

In all countries, health has become almost a luxury. To get sick and undergo any surgical intervention requires the disbursement of a good amount of money and if the patient does not have the resources, he is simply ignored and sent to a hospital, where it is generally devoid of equipment or supplies appropriate to the treatment or intervention required by the patient.

En mi opinión no es una película extraordinaria merecedora de un Oscar, pero es una buena película para ver con toda la familia, con excelentes actuaciones de los protagonistas y un hermoso mensaje que muestra hasta dónde llega el amor sacrificado de un padre por su hijo. Además, la película pone al desnudo una horrible realidad que ocurre en las clínicas y hospitales del mundo, la mercantilización de la salud. En todos los países la salud se ha convertido casi en un lujo. Enfermar y someterse a cualquier intervención quirúrgica requiere el desembolso de una buena cantidad de dinero y si el paciente no cuenta con los recursos, simplemente es ignorado y enviado a un hospital, donde generalmente está desprovisto de los equipos o insumos adecuados al tratamiento o intervención requerida por el paciente.

I was very struck by a very crude but very realistic phrase from the hospital director, referring to the family's lack of resources to pay for their son's operation. She said, "Mr. Archibald is not the only one with a sick child, people get sick and die, that's just the way it is." It is sad and it is true, but how unfortunate that some (not all) doctors are more concerned with checking the patient's wallet first before their state of health.

That reality is very common in my country Venezuela, here if you do not have money for a surgical intervention, you only have to go to the hospital, where all the expenses are paid by the patient's relatives and the doctors are so overloaded with work that it is impossible to provide a regular medical service to the public. The other option is to rely on the good faith of the people and start fundraising campaigns to raise the necessary funds.

Going back to the movie, I really liked that they aired this health problem in the public light, because it is a way to protest and fight for the right we all have to have our lives guaranteed through an adequate and diligent health system.

Me llamó mucho la atención una frase muy cruda pero muy realista de la directora del hospital, al referirse a la falta de recursos de la familia para costear la operación de su hijo. Ella dijo: "El señor Archibald no es el único con un hijo enfermo, la gente se enferma y se muere, así son las cosas". Es triste y es cierto, pero qué lamentable que algunos (no todos) médicos estén mas pendientes de revisar primero la cartera del paciente antes que su estado de salud. Esa realidad es muy común en mi país Venezuela, aquí si no tienes dinero para una intervención quirúrgica, solo te queda ir al hospital, donde todos los gastos corren por cuenta de los familiares del paciente y los médicos están tan atiborrados de trabajo que es imposible prestar un regular servicio médico al público. La otra opción es acudir a la buena fe de la gente y comenzar campañas de recolección de fondos para reunir lo necesario. Volviendo a la película, me gustó mucho que ventilaran este problema de salud a la luz pública, porque es una forma de protestar y luchar por el derecho que todos tenemos de que nos garanticen la vida a través de un adecuado y diligente sistema de salud.

To conclude / Para concluir

It is a realistic film that questions the health system of the countries and claims the right to life of all human beings. Sometimes the film falls into exaggerated drama, but it is a reality that can happen to anyone, especially those suffering from serious illnesses with treatments that are difficult to afford.

It is not only the fault of those who run the clinics and some doctors who forgot the oath they took when they received their degree, it is the responsibility of those in power who neglect the care of hospitals and do not adequately pay their health personnel. If the hospitals function properly, the clinics would be left for a small group of our population.

Es una película realista que pone en tela de juicio al sistema de salud de los países y reclama el derecho a la vida de todos los seres humanos. A veces la película cae en exagerado drama, pero es una realidad que puede ocurrirle a cualquier persona, sobretodo las que padecen enfermedades graves con tratamientos difíciles de costear. La culpa de que esto funcione de esta manera no es solo de los que dirigen las clínicas y de algunos médicos que olvidaron el juramento que hicieron al recibir su título, es responsabilidad de los gobernantes que descuidan la atención a los hospitales y no remuneran adecuadamente a su personal de salud. Si los hospitales funcionan adecuadamente, las clínicas quedarían para un reducido grupo de nuestra población.
