Last year was the 30th anniversary of Wild at Heart, a 1990 film directed by David Lynch (all his films leave a mark), based on the novel of the same name by Barry Gifford, winner of the Palme d'Or for best film at the 43rd Cannes Film Festival.
It is no coincidence that the jury, on that occasion, was presided over by the great Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, the remembered director of such memorable cinematic products as The Last Tango in Paris and Novecento, among others.
Starring Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton and Willem Dafoe, the film mixes strange and dissimilar elements together in the best style of David Lynch, a director who goes beyond traditional cinematic styles.
The plot focuses on a Shakespearean love story with strange events and typical elements of a road movie, atypical of course. To the point that it becomes a grotesque homage to the Wizard of Oz.
Innovative and revolutionary film director David Lynch shows in Wild at Heart a dreamlike image in sharp contrast with the real element.
If we had to look for a similar precedent, I could say that it is a film that shows an explosion of madness quite attenuated if we compare it with other masterpieces such as Mulholland Drive and Lost Roads, which reflects an evolution in Lynch's style and that will mark the link in the chain that will mark his cinematography from the nineties onwards.
In a sordid environment characterized by violence and crime, the main characters Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) and Lula Pace Fortune (Laura Dern) are lovers.
Sailor is imprisoned accused of having committed a murder in self-defense and after serving his sentence is released on parole for good behavior.
In violation of his parole, he flees with his lover to California, unleashing the fury of Marietta - Lula's mother - who tries by all means to eliminate Sailor, even hiring a detective to find his whereabouts.
The escape of the two lovers-criminals goes smoothly all over the U.S. until they witness the death of a little girl in a terrible car accident.
From that event, considered by both of them as a bad omen, luck begins to turn their backs.
In their wandering, without money, they arrive in Texas, with Lula pregnant, where Sailor is convinced by Bobby Peru, a small-time crook, to commit a robbery. It all ends badly. Peru is murdered and Sailor is arrested and imprisoned again.
Released from jail he is on his way to meet Lula and her son when he gets cold feet and turns back to follow his own destiny and heads back to the station. At that moment he encounters a local gang that attacks him and beats him ferociously.
And here is perhaps the best part of the film. Because at the moment when the "good fairy" appears to him as if in a dream to suggest him to return to find his beloved and his son, the viewer is not sure if this is the last thing Sailor sees in his life before dying and his is a kind of "mea culpa" or if this beating was indeed a way to change his life forever.

I think that to understand this David Lynch's film we have to accept the fact that it is a sarcastic satire, hyperrealistic, a grotesque drama.
We can use whatever words we want but Lynch's film is undoubtedly one of the most innovative of recent years.
Excellent soundtrack and an ending that lays bare the desolation of American society, until then an almost taboo subject, very little treated, reserved for the so-called cult cinema.
