Before I watched the first episode of "Gen V", I wasn't fully convinced that they would succeed. It's true that the creators of "The Boys" haven't disappointed yet, but the same could be said about Marvel's "Endgame" and many other projects. These often, not to say usually, go wrong when the creators had a plan only for the beginning (or had a few ideas that they got rid of at the stage of season 1, max in the middle of season 2) or when the series/film exceeded the expected profits, became a success and you can earn really big amounts of money from it. All the more so because Amazon, HBO, Disney and Netflix are producing more and more bad content, because people have lower and lower expectations, they are more and more hungry for easily digestible content of little value - contrary to appearances, I'm not just talking about quality or a vulgar script (which for some , is synonymous with low quality). Among others the left (although the right would also do it, but they slept through the stage when contemporary mass culture was developing, so I can't do it with as much effectiveness), people from marketing, excels of the above-mentioned companies wanting to please the American left and this type of group, they also spoil other things, e.g. the sense of humor in "Rick and Morty" (and other cartoons, although I don't watch them, but generally I hear the same thing - everything that is not "South Park" hides existing jokes from the left and uses vulgar, but stupid and simple jokes mocking the right wing... Where is the wise humor for the intelligent?!). Why am I writing about this? Because "Gen V" perfectly complements the criticism of leftist mentality, human consumerism (in this case, as well as subsequent ones - it applies to all social groups), naivety and short-sightedness. Plus, it's just a good series with interesting characters and a nice plot.
Atmospherically and thematically, it resembles "X-Men", but made for adults. Or else, because I've heard of several comics or comic book series where Marvel's Mutants were shown in a serious way, without hiding the brutality, without changing the plot, i.e. adapting it to a younger audience for whom it is still too strong. Well, the first spin-off of "The Boys" is just such a series. We see this at the very beginning, when the main character gets her first period. An important moment in the life of every girl, her mother and father. Marie Moreau, unaware of her powers, brutally kills her parents in front of her only sister. Then we get other stories presenting, among others: no less terrifying origins of super-people or a combination of teenage naivety and stupidity with too much power... Yes, you think right - it is bloody, shocking and funny, as long as you like dark humor and the creativity of the screenwriters in these aspects. After a few years, Marie goes to a special University for Super-people, where at first she is an ordinary random, but due to certain events, she jumps to the top of the hierarchy from one day to the next.
The idea is not very original, we have already seen such a scenario in thousands of versions, but it is only a starting idea. If we present it well, we will be praised for our creativity or whatever. If we present it incorrectly, we will be criticized for creating the same thing for the hundredth time, commercial approach, etc. There are some things wrong with "Gen V" and... that's probably the only complaint I have about this show. Especially since these are things that could be fixed relatively easily (a bit of boredom in the middle of the series, and since they have money and great opportunities, they could afford more). Nevertheless, it is not a big problem. Especially since they made great use of the fact that the action takes place at the University and developed the universe of "The Boys". Starting with the first one, parties are a thing of the past, but parties with super hero powers are something else! Or using your powers to see something forbidden or obtain certain resources illegally. Or showing the problems of teenagers (both the new ones that have appeared thanks to technological progress, and the old ones that we have not yet dealt with). I mentioned politics, the creators still mock consumerism, excessive faith in corporate propaganda, mocking Marvel and DC, etc.
I don't have much to say about the actors. They played well, sometimes better, sometimes mediocre, but there weren't many moments they didn't succeed. If there were any at all. I'm not talking about it in terms of advantages or disadvantages, maybe I'm slightly pushing the latter. They just didn't show anything special. I don't know if I'd be lying if I said they didn't have a single good scene, they probably did, but I don't remember any of them apart from the opening scene - the actress from the young protagonist activating her power for the first time. It was also shocking to show how the blonde also used her power unconsciously, but in this case... In my opinion, it was more due to the script and creativity, the actress simply played her role solidly, but without fireworks. I can say the same about the effects - they were ok, they met the series standards, they didn't hurt the eyes, but beyond the control of the blood... I didn't remember anything.
I'm glad that the first spin-off was a success, thanks to which there will be more, and I like this universe and I'd love to see more. The series itself... It was good, but I can't say it was anything more than "just solid work". There simply weren't enough strong elements, and I've seen too many outstanding series over the last three years. I have no reason to complain, except for one episode, I wasn't bored, there was always something to watch... Well, I didn't see anything that would make a strong impression on me. Apart from a few successful scenes. I was delighted with the beginning, but the subsequent scenes did not use the full potential of this story. For me 6.5/10
Zanim obejrzałem pierwszy odcinek "Gen V", nie byłem w pełni przekonany, czy im się to uda. Co prawda twórcy "The Boys" jeszcze nie zawiedli, ale to samo można było powiedzieć o Marvelu do "Endgame" i wielu innych projektach. Te często, by nie powiedzieć że zazwyczaj, psują się jak twórcy mieli plan wyłącznie na początek (lub mieli kilka pomysłów, których pozbyli się na etapie 1 sezonu, max w połowie 2) lub gdy serial / film przerósł spodziewane zyski, stał się sukcesem i można na nim zarabiać naprawdę grube kwoty. Tym bardziej, że Amazon, HBO, Disney i Netflix produkują coraz więcej kiepskich treści, bo ludzie mają coraz niższe oczekiwania, coraz bardziej łakną lekkostrawnego contentu o niewielkiej wartości - wbrew pozorom, nie mówię tylko o jakości, czy nie wulgarnym scenariuszu (który dla niektórych, jest synonimem niskiej jakości). M.in. lewica (choć prawica też by to robiła, ale przespali etap, kiedy współczesna kultura masowa się rozwijała, więc nie mogę tego robić z równie dużą skutecznością), ludzie od marketingu, exceli w/w firm chcący przypodobać się lewicy amerykańskiej i tego typu grupy, psują też inne rzeczy, np. poczucie humoru w "Rick and Morty" (oraz innych kreskówkach, co prawda ich nie oglądam, ale generalnie słyszę to samo - wszystko co nie jest "South Park", ukrywa dotychczasowe żarty z lewicy i stosuje wulgarne, ale głupie i proste żarty wyśmiewające prawicę... Gdzie się podział mądry humor dla inteligentnych?!). Dlaczego o tym piszę? Bo "Gen V" idealnie uzupełnia krytykę lewicowej mentalności, ludzkiego konsumpcjonizmu (w tym przypadku, jak i kolejnych - dotyczy to wszystkich grup społecznych), naiwności i krótkowzroczności. A dodatkowo jest po prostu dobrym serialem z ciekawymi postaciami i przyjemną fabułą.
Klimatycznie i tematycznie przypomina on takich "X-Menów", ale zrobionych dla dorosłych. Albo inaczej, bo słyszałem o kilku komiksach lub seriach komiksów, gdzie Mutanci z Marvela zostali pokazani w poważny sposób, bez ukrywania brutalności, bez zmieniania fabuły, tj. dostosowywania jej do młodszego odbiorcy, dla którego to jest jeszcze zbyt mocne. No, to pierwszy spin-off "The Boys" jest takim właśnie takim serialem. Przekonujemy się o tym już na początku, gdy główna bohaterka dostaje swojej pierwszej miesiączki. Ważna chwila w życiu każdej dziewczyny, jej matki i ojca. Marie Moreau nieświadoma swoich mocy, zabija w brutalny sposób rodziców na oczach jej jedynej siostry. Potem dostajemy inne historie prezentujące m.in. nie mniej przerażające genezy super-ludzi lub połączenie nastoletniej naiwności i głupoty ze zbyt dużą mocą... Tak, dobrze myślicie - jest krwawo, szokująco i zabawnie, o ile lubicie czarny humor i kreatywność scenarzystów w tych aspektach. Po kilku latach, Marie trafia do specjalnego Uniwersytetu dla Super-ludzi, gdzie początkowo jest zwykłym randomem, ale na skutek pewnych wydarzeń, z dnia na dzień wskakuje na szczyt hierarchii.
Pomysł co prawda nie jest zbyt oryginalny, widzieliśmy już taki scenariusz w tysiącach wersji, ale to tylko pomysł wyjściowy. Jeżeli przedstawimy go dobrze, zostaniemy pochwaleni za kreatywność lub za cokolwiek innego. Jeżeli przedstawimy go źle, zostaniemy skrytykowani za tworzenie po raz setny tego samego, komercyjne podejście etc. W "Gen V" niektóre rzeczy są nieudane i... to jest chyba jedyny zarzut, jaki mam wobec tego serialu. Tym bardziej, że są to rzeczy, które można było stosunkowo łatwo naprawić (lekka nuda w środku serialu, a skoro mają pieniądze, duże możliwości, to stać ich było na więcej). Niemniej, nie jest to duży problem. Tym bardziej, że bardzo fajnie wykorzystali fakt, że akcja dzieje się na Uniwersytecie oraz rozwinęli uniwersum "The Boys". Zaczynając od tego pierwszego, imprezy to przeszłość, ale imprezy z mocami-super hero, to co innego! Albo wykorzystywanie swoich mocy, by zobaczyć coś zakazanego albo zdobyć w nielegalny sposób pewne zasoby. Albo pokazanie problemów nastolatków (zarówno tych nowych, które pojawiły się dzięki postępowi technologicznemu, jak i te stare, z którymi sobie jeszcze nie poradziliśmy). Wspomniałem o polityce, twórcy nadal wyśmiewają konsumpcjonizm, nadmierną wiarę w korporacyjną propagandę, drwienie z Marvela i DC etc.
W kwestii aktorów nie mam zbyt wiele do powiedzenia. Zagrali nieźle, momentami lepiej, momentami przeciętnie, raczej nie było zbyt wielu momentów, które im się nie udały. O ile w ogóle były. Nie mówię o tym w kategoriach wad ani zalet, no może lekko naciskam na to drugie. Po prostu nie wykazali się niczym szczególnym. Nie wiem, czy skłamałbym, gdybym powiedział, że nie mieli ani jednej dobrej sceny, pewnie takie były, ale nie pamiętam o żadnej z nich poza sceną otwierającą - aktorka od młodej protagonistki, która pierwszy raz aktywowała swoją moc. Szokujące było też pokazanie jak blondynka również użyła nieświadomie swoją moc, ale w tym przypadku... Moim zdaniem to bardziej zasługa scenariusza i pomysłowości, aktorka po prostu solidnie, ale bez fajerwerków, zagrała swoją rolę. To samo mogę powiedzieć o efektach - były ok, spełniają serialowe standardy, nie kłują w oczy, ale poza kontrolą krwi... Nic mi nie zapadło w pamięci.
Cieszę się, że pierwszy spin-off odniósł sukces, dzięki temu pojawią się kolejne, a ja lubię to uniwersum i chętnie zobaczę kolejne. Sam serial... Był dobry, ale nie mogę powiedzieć, by to było coś więcej niż "tylko solidna robota". Po prostu było za mało mocnych elementów, a ja przez ostatnie 3 lata zobaczyłem zbyt wiele wybitnych seriali. Nie mam powodów do narzekań, poza jednym odcinkiem, to nie nudziłem się, ciągle było coś do oglądania... No ale właśnie, nie zobaczyłem nic, co by zrobiło na mnie mocne wrażenie. Poza kilkoma udanymi scenami. Byłem zachwycony początkiem, ale kolejne sceny nie wykorzystały pełnego potencjału drzemiącego w tej historii. Jak dla mnie 6.5/10
