Last Sunday, we felt like watching a light movie. I suggested the latest Disney movie with Daisy Ridley, about a young swimmer who was the first to swim across the English Channel. Asia doesn't like swimming, but like me she likes such family films + she is a woman, and since we usually watch "men's films", nothing will happen if I sometimes watch something outside my bubble. Well... Not entirely outside of my own, because I have loved water and swimming since I was a child. I don't like Disney or the new Star Wars trilogy, but there are two "buts". Disney can sometimes make a movie that promises to be boring and hopeless, but is unironically good (Highschool Musical, Cruella). As for the actress, Disney imposed certain standards on her due to the fact that it is a huge PG-13 franchise, so everything has to work perfectly. So I couldn't test her skills in the craft of acting.
A biographical film appeared on D+ in which she played Gertrude Ederle, one of the greatest icons of women's sports. The film is a bit artificial and oversimplifies / presents in an overly sweet way (as Disney does), but in my opinion there is no tragedy. Or in other words, maybe some people will complain, but for me, there is no significant reason for it. Unless, unlike me, you expected an Oscar-winning, super-realistic production. You don't feel the importance of her task or the distance of this route at all. There have been changes made to her biography book (aside from significantly speeding up the second attempt, I don't see them making any other big mistake), but these aren't usually a problem. Why? Because, to repeat the words of my colleague, a doctor of history, if TV series and films were 100% faithful to it, they would be extremely boring. Besides, it can be presented much simpler and faster in the book. It's the same with biographical films - it can't be presented in a nice way without making some concessions (e.g. deciding what period of the hero's/heroine's life we present, what we cut out and why, what we have to change because it doesn't look good on the big screen). The actress didn't have much time for herself either, because the first half of the film is about Gertrude's past, and in the second half we see her more often in the water than on land, so I can't rate her acting. Well, I knew all this before I started the session. Well, apart from Daisy Ridley, I will have to wait for another opportunity to evaluate her honestly.
How does the film look? It's a little better than the average production, which is neither good nor bad. It was quite decent to watch and I wasn't bored, apart from 2 or 3 short moments when I instinctively reached for my phone. As I already said, the film is about Gertrude Ederle. She is a girl from an emigrant German family who decides to achieve sports success, despite the patriarchy in force at that time. This is not an easy task, because these are the times when the father's word was unquestionably sacred. We follow the fate of young Gertuda from an early age, when she fell ill with a disease that takes a heavy toll on children. She manages to recover, but from that day on she gradually begins to lose her hearing. However, the young girl is ambitious and does not want to give up her hobby. She is supported by her mother, sister and father (with some coercion). I must praise the director for not making the dad look clumsy, as the creators of the Peppa Pig cartoon do and several other creators have already done. The film doesn't pretend what the times were like back then (although it shows it in a rather polite way, unlike films/series intended for older viewers), but it also doesn't make him an overbearing dictator.
As for the remaining aspects (editing, acting, pace of the film, cinematography), there is not much to write about. Although I genuinely liked the movie, as a whole it is quite standard. It doesn't stand out in any aspect. Editing and directing - standard, I can only say that it was quite pleasant to watch and I was not bored, but considering the water theme, it was tempting to have a little fun with the editing of the film. Pacing - I've already written about it, the pace is ok and I can actually praise it because I didn't even feel these 2 hours. The cinematography... Well, it's Disney, so I'm betting that many of the cinematography and water scenes were created using CGI in their in-house studio. I didn't expect anything from Disney on this matter, so I'm not complaining.
The acting is ok, but I have nothing to criticize or praise them for. Or not, there are two roles. Vessemir from Netflix's The Witcher (Gertrude's Father) stood out together with his film wife (Tilda Cobham-Hervey). I can also single out Olive Abercrombie for her role as young Gertrude. She's not as good as Dafne Keen, but I see some future potential in her. Although I won't judge which one is better - Ciri did poorly in the Netflix series, but in the new part of Planet of the Apes she showed that she can act. I've already written about Daisy, she didn't show anything in this film.
Overall, it's just a good movie. Such a Rocky very light for women and girls. I don't promise that your partners or husbands will like it, because they might get bored, but with your daughter? Of course. I rate it a slightly far-fetched +6/10. By the way, I'm currently watching another women's title that has won my heart. You will definitely be able to see Hazbin Hotel with your man, because it is a female South Park, which is on the same level as the above-mentioned satire and the first seasons of R&M.
W ostatnią niedzielę, mieliśmy ochotę na jakiś lekki film. Zaproponowałem najnowszy film Disneya z Daisy Ridley, o młodej pływaczce która jako pierwsza przepłynęła przez kanał La Manche. Asia co prawda nie przepada za pływaniem, ale podobnie jak ja lubi takie familijne filmy + jest kobietą, a że zwykle oglądamy "męskie filmy", to nic się nie stanie, jak czasem obejrzę coś spoza swojej bańki. No... Nie do końca spoza swojej, bo od dziecka kocham wodę i pływanie. Nie przepadam za Disneyem, jak również za nową trylogią Star Wars, ale są dwa "ale". Disneyowi czasem potrafi zrobić film, który zapowiada się na nudny i beznadziejny, ale jest nieironicznie dobry (Highschool Musical, Cruella). Jeśli chodzi o aktorkę, to Disney narzucał jej pewne standardy w związku z tym, że to olbrzymia franczyza PG-13, więc wszystko musi działać w idealny sposób. Nie mogłem więc sprawdzić jej umiejętności w rzemiośle aktorskim.
Na D+ pojawił się film biograficzny, w którym wcieliła się w Gertrude Ederle, jedną z największych ikon kobiecego sportu. Film jest trochę sztuczny i nadmiernie upraszcza / przedstawia w nadmiernie słodki sposób (jak to Disney), ale wg mnie nie ma tragedii. Albo inaczej, może niektórzy będą się czepiać, ale jak dla mnie, nie ma ku temu istotnego powodu. No chyba, że w przeciwieństwie do mnie, oczekiwaliście Oscarowej, super-realistycznej produkcji. W ogóle nie czuć wagi jej zadania ani dystansu tej trasy. Wprowadzono zmiany do jej książki biograficznej (poza znaczącym przyśpieszeniem drugiej próby, nie widzę by popełnili inny, duży błąd), ale te zwykle nie są problemem. Dlaczego? Bo powtarzając słowa mojego kolegi, doktora historii, gdyby seriale i filmy byłyby jej w 100% wierne, to byłyby wybitnie nudne. Poza tym, w książce można to przedstawić znacznie prościej i szybciej. Tak samo jest z filmami biograficznymi - nie da się go przedstawić w fajny sposób, bez pójścia na pewne ustępstwa (np. decyzje, jaki okres życia bohatera / bohaterki przedstawiamy, co wycinamy i dlaczego, co musimy zmienić bo źle wygląda na dużym ekranie). Aktorka też nie miała zbyt wiele czasu dla siebie, bo pierwsza połowa filmu to przeszłość Gertrudy, a w drugiej połowie częściej ją widzimy w wodzie niż na lądzie, przez co nie mogę ocenić jej aktorstwa. No ale wszystko to wiedziałem zanim rozpocząłem seans. No poza Daisy Ridley, będę musiał poczekać na kolejną okazję, by ją uczciwie ocenić.
Jak się prezentuje film? Jest trochę lepszy niż przeciętna produkcja, która nie jest ani dobra ani zła. Oglądało się ją całkiem przyzwoicie i nie nudziłem się, pomijając 2,3 krótkie momenty, gdy odruchowo sięgnąłem po telefon. Jak już mówiłem, film opowiada o Gertrudze Ederle. Jest to dziewczyna pochodząca z emigranckiej, niemieckiej rodziny, która postanawia na przekór obowiązującemu wówczas patriarchatowi, osiągnąć sportowy sukces. Nie jest to łatwe zadanie, bo są to czasy, gdy słowo ojca było niepodważalną świętością. Obserwujemy losy młodej Gertudy od najmłodszych lat, gdy zachorowała na chorobę zbierającą duże żniwa wśród dzieci. Udaje jej się wyleczyć, ale od tego dnia zaczyna stopniowo tracić słuch. Młoda dziewczyna jest jednak ambitna i nie chce porzucić swojego hobby. Wspiera ją mama,siostra oraz ojciec (po lekkim przymusie). Muszę pochwalić reżyserkę, że nie zrobiła z taty niezdary, jak to robią twórcy kreskówki Świnka Peppa i zrobiło już kilku innych twórców. Film nie udaje, jakie były wtedy czasy (choć pokazuje to w dość ugrzecznionej formie w przeciwieństwie do filmów / seriali przeznaczonych dla starszych widzów), ale też nie robi z niego apodyktycznego dyktatora.
Jeśli chodzi o pozostałe aspekty (montaż, aktorstwo, tempo filmu, zdjęcia), to niespecjalnie jest o czym pisać. Choć film autentycznie mi się podobał, to jako całość jest dość standardowa. Nie wyróżnia się w jakimkolwiek aspekcie. Montaż i reżyseria - standard, mogę jedynie powiedzieć, że całkiem przyjemnie się to oglądało i nie nudziłem się, ale biorąc pod uwagę wodną tematyką, to aż się prosiło by się trochę pobawić montażem filmu. Pacing - już o nim napisałem, tempo jest ok i w sumie mogę je pochwalić, bo nawet nie poczułem tych 2 godzin. Zdjęcia... Cóż, to Disney, więc stawiam że wiele zdjęć i wodne sceny powstały za pomocą CGI w ich wewnętrznym studiu. Nie oczekiwałem od Disneya czegokolwiek w tej materii, więc nie narzekam.
Aktorstwo - jest ok, ale nie mam za co ich skrytykować lub pochwalić. Albo nie, są dwie role. Vessemir z Netflixowego Wiedźmina (Ojciec Gertrudy) wyróżnił się wraz ze swoją filmową żoną (Tilda Cobham-Hervey). Mogę też wyróżnić Olive Abercrombie za rolę młodej Gertrudy. Nie jest tak dobra, jak Dafne Keen, ale dostrzegam w niej pewien potencjał na przyszłość. Chociaż w sumie nie będę oceniał, która jest lepsza - Ciri w serialu Netflixa wypadła słabo, ale w nowej części Planety Małp pokazała, że umie grać. O Daisy już pisałem, nie pokazała nic w tym filmie.
Reasumując, to po prostu niezły film. Taki Rocky very light dla kobiet i dziewczynek. Nie obiecuję, że spodoba się Waszym partnerom lub mężom, bo może się znudzą, ale z córką? Jak najbardziej. Oceniam go na takie lekko naciągane +6/10. A tak swoją drogą, właśnie oglądam inny tytuł dla kobiet, który zdobył moje serce. Hazbin Hotel już jak najbardziej będziecie mogli zobaczyć ze swoim mężczyzną, bo to żeński South Park, który jest na tym samym poziomie, co w/w satyra i pierwsze sezony R&M.
