Just watched 1917 and it was as intense and good as I was hoping it would be.
1917 is an long intense movie with lots of feels all in "one shot" and real time so get the comfy seats to watch the movie. Definitely watch this one in a theater too.
Sam Mendes is definitely my favorite mainstream auteur that's still alive. Even though the main character was his grandpa, I gotta admit I did have moments of appreciation when he didn't forget to include that there actually were Indian British folks and African British soldiers in the frontlines as well. It's a pat-on-the-back move but almost no other World War movie with white main characters ever cares to do that so I appreciated it. The movie is such a contrast to other intense real time war movies like Dunkirk or other movies using the "one shot" style like Birdman. (I didn't like Dunkirk or Birdman. I did like 1917 a lot though.)
I did see that Roger Deakins was A cam and was wondering how his 70 year old body handled 60 lbs steadicams but I realized after seeing set photos that his rig with the new Alexa Mini LF is super small and light. It's really cool to see how digital technology advances filmmaking.
Anyways, repeating myself but super worth watching in theater. Get them prime seats or dine-in seats with super good audio if you can.
