"Fire is a risk that is always present in any facility, and more likely than any other specific risk of disastrous proportions"
_With this quote I want to start, it is not from a famous author nor is it well known, it is an excerpt from my undergraduate thesis. My intention is not to give you a lecture, far from it, it is just that fire is the cause of many misfortunes that are often the result of acts that can mow in seconds the life of the protagonist of this story.
When a good friend told me "watch this Netflix miniseries, it made me cry", I did not hesitate to look it up and live many emotions together in 5 chapters that made me understand why the main characters of this story did not stop reliving every day the same night.
Synopsis
This miniseries is based on real events, the event occurred in Brazil, Santa Maria, where a group of young people, 242 to be exact, lost their lives in a fire that originated in the Kiss Club. That night, it was meant to be fun, many of the young people who went to the trendy nightclub did so to celebrate their birthday, a personal achievement, or simply wanted to have a good time with their friends. Unfortunately, many of them did not return home.
The miniseries focuses its main characters on several families, who upon learning of the fire in the city, prayed not to find their children in those endless lines of bodies lying inert on the ground, waiting to be recognized. They prayed not to find them in the hospitals, in the places where they took the corpses, they hoped that they had gone to party somewhere else and it was no wonder. I imagined for a moment what it would feel like to be there, searching and at the same time not wanting to find a loved one who went out to have fun and who thought they might see the radiant sunlight again.
Like any accident, the fire was investigated in order to find out if it was deliberately set or if it was indeed accidental, in short, to discover what was the source of ignition that caused it. Many people managed to get out of the nightclub in a few minutes, others were trapped, however, those who found their way out did not manage to survive. Time is crucial in this type of incident, as toxic vapors are one of the main causes of death before being devoured by fire. Time is a decisive factor; those who found the exit door were sure to survive, but they did not. The results of the investigation yielded some rather interesting findings.
"Silence is the worst enemy of injustice"
Perhaps this would have been just another accident, just another fire, however, the families of the deceased were not silent and battled until they found those responsible. Days, months and years went by amidst legal litigation, trials and lawsuits. There were indeed guilty parties, but there is not much to be done against the powers that be. These families never gave up and continued their fight. Is it really worth fighting so hard?.
"United by pain"
These parents lived in reverse the course of nature, they had to bury their children. Life became uphill for them, it became difficult for them to understand that life goes on and to do so they had to find a purpose. Not forgetting those who are gone and honoring them was the only way. Pain united these families, so they would not feel so alone, when sorrows are shared it is easier to go on. Crime has to be punished, however, when there is abuse of power it usually goes unpunished. It is not only about winning, leaving a precedent was the beginning to avoid more deaths, because punishing the culprits was not going to diminish their sentences and much less give back the lives of their loved ones.
"The Price of a Life"
This miniseries brought back memories, fire was the subject of my undergraduate thesis, it was titled "Redesigning a fire water system". While I was an intern, I was lazy to follow the safety rules, I would cut through the road committing unsafe acts that could have attempted against my own life, well, I was young and I said "that will not happen to me". I was too lazy to make the trip along the road, and you know what I would do, I would go through the plant without a helmet to get to the exit faster. One of those afternoons, the Head of Industrial Safety called my attention, I told her that nothing was going to happen, to stop being so tragic, and she told me, I remember her words verbatim, "it is because of people like you that accidents happen".
At the beginning of the story, one of the members of the band playing in the club while everyone was dancing and singing wanted to give a different twist to the concert and lit some sparklers, that was the beginning of the tragedy. I was unaware that there are flares for indoor and outdoor use. The former are very inexpensive and contain gunpowder, while the latter are four times the cost of the former and are not flammable. This leads me to ask the question, "How much is a person's life worth?.
Each chapter of this miniseries is loaded with very emotional doses and many emotions are experienced at the same time, the actors knew how to represent them very well. It is not easy to wake up with the absence of those who are no longer there, to deal not only with the scars that marked the bodies of those who managed to survive, but also with those of the soul, to see the mutilations over and over again as a result of that fateful accident that will forever remind these people "every day the same night".

“El fuego es un riesgo que está siempre presente en cualquier establecimiento, y más probable que otro riesgo específico de proporciones desastrosas”
Con esta cita quiero comenzar, no es de un autor famoso ni tampoco conocido, es un fragmento de mi tesis de grado. Mi intención no es impartirles una cátedra ni mucho menos, es solo que el fuego es el causante de muchas desgracias que suelen ser consecuencia de actos que pueden segar en segundos la vida, la protagonista de esta historia.
Cuando un buen amigo me dijo “mira esta miniserie de Netflix, me hizo llorar”, no dudé en buscarla y vivir muchas emociones juntas en 5 capítulos que me hicieron entender el porqué los personajes principales de esta historia no dejaban de revivir todos los días la misma noche.
Sinopsis
Esta miniserie está basada en hechos reales, el suceso ocurrió en Brasil, Santa María, donde un grupo de jóvenes, 242 para ser exactos, perdieron la vida en un incendio que tuvo su origen en el Club Kiss. Esa noche, estaba destinada a la diversión, muchos de los jóvenes que acudieron al antro de moda lo hicieron para celebrar su cumpleaños, un logro personal, o simplemente, querían pasarla bien con sus amigos. Lamentablemente, muchos de ellos no retornaron a sus respectivas casas.
La miniserie centra en sus personajes principales a varias familias, que al enterarse del incendio ocurrido en la discoteca rogaron no encontrar a sus hijos en aquellas colas interminables de cuerpos que yacían inertes en el suelo, esperando a ser reconocidos. Rogaban no encontrarlos en los hospitales, en los sitios donde llevaron a los cadáveres, esperaban que se hubieran ido de fiesta a otro lugar y no era para menos. Me imaginé por un instante que se sentiría estar allí, buscando y a la vez no queriendo encontrar a un ser querido que salió a divertirse y que pensó que podría ver de nuevo la radiante luz del sol.
Como cualquier accidente, el incendio fue investigado con el propósito de saber si fue provocado adrede o si efectivamente fue accidental, en resumen, descubrir cuál fue la fuente de ignición que lo originó. Muchas personas consiguieron salir del club nocturno en pocos minutos, otros quedaron atrapados, sin embargo, aquellos que encontraron la salida no lograron sobrevivir. El tiempo en este tipo de siniestros es crucial, los vapores tóxicos constituyen una las principales causas de la muerte antes de ser devorados por el fuego. El tiempo es un factor decisivo, los que hallaron la puerta de salida eran seguros sobrevivientes, pero no fue así. Los resultados de la investigación arrojaron unos hallazgos bastante interesantes.
“El silencio es el peor enemigo de la injusticia”
Quizás este hubiera sido un accidente más, un incendio más, sin embargo, las familias de los fallecidos no se callaron y batallaron hasta encontrar a los responsables. Entre litigios legales, juicios y leyes, transcurrieron los días, meses y años. Efectivamente, había culpables, pero contra el poder no hay mucho que hacer. Estas familias no se rindieron nunca y continuaron con su lucha. ¿Realmente vale la pena luchar tanto? .
“Unidos por el dolor”
Estos padres vivieron de manera inversa el curso de la naturaleza, tuvieron que enterrar a sus hijos. La vida se les puso cuesta arriba, se les hizo difícil entender que la vida continúa y para hacerlo tenían que encontrar un propósito. No olvidar a quienes ya se han ido y honrarlos era el único camino. El dolor unió a estas familias, así no sentirían tan solos, cuando se comparten las penas es más fácil seguir. El delito tiene que castigarse, no obstante, cuando hay abuso de poder éste suele quedar impune. No se trata solo de ganar, dejar un precedente era el principio para evitar más muertes, porque castigar a los culpables, no iba disminuir sus penas y mucho menos devolverles la vida a sus seres queridos.
“El precio de una vida”
Esta miniserie me trajo recuerdos, el fuego fue el tema de mi tesis de grado, tuvo como título “Rediseñar un sistema de agua contra incendios”. Mientras fui pasante me daba pereza seguir las normas de seguridad, cortaba camino cometiendo actos inseguros que pudieron haber atentado contra mi propia vida, bueno, yo era joven y decía “eso no me va a pasar a mi”. Me daba pereza hacer el recorrido por la caminería, ¿y saben que hacía yo?, me metía sin casco por la planta para llegar más rápido a la salida. Una de esas tardes, la Jefe de Seguridad Industrial me llamó la atención, yo le dije que no iba a pasar nada, que dejara de ser tan trágica, y ella me dijo, recuerdo textualmente sus palabras, “por personas como tú es que ocurren los accidentes”.
Al principio de la historia, uno de los integrantes de la banda que tocaba en el antro mientras todos bailaban y cantaban quiso darle un giro diferente al concierto y encendió unas bengalas, ese fue el principio de la tragedia. Yo desconocía que hay bengalas para uso en espacios exteriores e interiores. Las primeras son muy económicas y contienen pólvora, mientras que las segundas superan cuatro veces más el costo da las primeras y no son inflamables. Esto me lleva a hacer una pregunta, ¿Cuánto vale la vida una persona?.
Cada capítulo de esta miniserie está cargado de dosis muy emotivas y se experimentan muchas emociones a la vez, los actores supieron representarlas muy bien. No es fácil despertar con la ausencia de los que ya no están, lidiar no solo con las cicatrices que marcaron los cuerpos de aquellos que lograron sobrevivir, sino también con las del alma, ver las mutilaciones una y otra vez producto de aquel fatídico accidente que le recordarán para siempre a estas personas “todos días la misma noche”.
